I just bought this unit and I have the following questions:
1. What's the largest drives that I can insert and use in RAID 1 configuration? Is the 1.2TB the total capacity of the drives, and so I can't have two 1TB drives in RAID 1?
2. What's the typical power consumption (kWh or Watts) in stand-by and when the hard drives are spinning?
3. What drives are good for low power consumption and low heat? What drives do you guys use?
4. Is D-Link planning on having this supported in Windows Vista? I've seen some kind of network storage that used UPnP and was just right-clicked and installed, and it can be configured right on the Properties Tab (Right-click -> Properties) in Vista. When I do this with my DNS-323, it fails to install.

You will get some answers using the serach function in this forum i.e. concerning 2.) :
There was a test in the german computer magazin "c't 07/2007", page 190 and they measured the following numbers for DNS323 equipped with two Samsung SP2504C (250 GB) disks:
Idle : 25.3 W
Non Idle: 26.2 W
Idle with disk spin down: 10.7 W
Consider that ONE samsung SP2504C disks consumes
9.5 W Seeking
8.0 W Reading / Writing
7.5 W Idle
1.5 W Standby (spin down)

1 - Where are you getting these figures from? 1.2 TB total capacity? The largest drive I've heard of used with the DNS-323 has been 750 GB - which required a firmware update, there's no reason why 1TB drives shouldn't work - but at some point someone is going to have to cough up the bucks to buy one and try it, since you apparently have deep enough pockets, why don't you be the first?
2 - Has been answered already
3 - Search the forum there are existing threads on this topic.
4 - This is a NAS which uses Microsoft's SMB/CIFS - when used with Windows, there is no need for drivers - and that includes Vista - which is something else you would have found using the search function.

1. Hitachi 1TB drives are reported to work http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t565-Hitac … lity.html, and other vendors are producing 1TB drives (Western Digital WD Caviar® GP & Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS) later this year.
4. No 'drivers' are needed for use with Vista; however, others have reported a security policy settings change is needed --see http://dns323.kood.org/forum/p5164-2007 … html#p5164 for more detail. A quick search of the forum for 'vista' will reveal other posts with vista related information.

1. Bonkers. I was looking at so many NAS devices I mixed up the DNS-323 with another NAS's specs. Sorry.
4. I realize it's just a NAS device that require no drivers. However, there are new functionalities that Vista makes available, and was just wondering about plans on having support for them. That is all.
See the WinHEC 2007 video here: http://www.microsoft.com/winme/0705/300 … es_MBR.asx
The bit is at 20 minutes into the video. They didn't show off too much about settings that were available for the storage device, however, I have the router they're using and Vista makes it possible to change some settings without the need to log in to the router's built-in web UI.
