Converting to JBOD?

I currently have a DNS-323 with a 750gig seagate Barracuda drive installed. On this I have my TV Show xvids. I've only got 150gigs free space left on this drive.

I just finished ripping my entire dvd collection (Approx 500 movies) and am looking at about 600 gigs of space needed. Because I needed some room for expansion, ie dvd's purchased in the future and new TV shows, I purchased another DNS-323 and 2x500gig Seagate Barracudas. Just couldn't bring myself to fork out the price premium of the 750gigs again never mind the 1TB drives. So cheap ass 500gigs it was to be !! big_smile

I also have a spare 320gig drive.

So heres the thing. I want to install one of the new 500gigs alongside the 750gig in the first TV Show DNS. That would give me 1250gigs. Obviously new TV shows are accumulated a lot quicker when you are following about 15 shows a week. In the new Movie DNS I will install the second 500gig drive and my spare 320gig. That gives me space for another 150 movie rips or so.

Would I be correct in thinking that JBOD while not being a redundant system does show up as one volume for reading and writing and that different sized disks can be used without wasting any space? ie its not like raid on the DNS where the total space is double the size of the smallest disk?? I would really like to change to JBOD now while it seems easiest(assuming I am understanding everything correctly) because then I can write TV SHow folders and new content to the TV SHow DNS without a care about where exactly it goes on the drives. As seperate disks I have to spread the tv show folders very carefully across the disks to take acccount of new content. (To help you understand. I'd end up running out of space a lot quicker on one disc thn the other if I don't plan carefully. ie Too many 24ep seasons on one disk and short season shows with shows that end up cancelled on the other. Then I have to move folders around to redistribute them across the disks. Its been a pain. JBOD solves that I think.

If thats right then I would like to set both up as JBOD. But I need to format the 750gig along with the new 500gig then don't I. So how is this for a plan....Put the 500gig and 320 gig in the new DNS and set it up as JBOD. 820gigs of space. Copy across the 600 gigs of TV Shows from the first D-Link. Then insert the other new 500 gig drive into my first D-Link. 1250gigs of space. Reformat both drives and set it up as JBOD. Then copy back the 600gigs of TV Shows onto the newly JBOD'd 1250gig TV SHOW DNS. Delete the 600 gigs of TV Shows off the second MOVIE D-Link and copy across the Movie rips.

Can someone clarify that thats all correct or am I missing something, or if anyone has any ideas about how to make all these transfers as efficient as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Converting to JBOD?

Diifferent size disks can be used - JBOD will show as a single drive with a total capacity of the drives it is created from.
