Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Before I ask my question, here is the appropriate background info:
I have a 300GB sesgate, and a 250GB seagate running RAID1. I have had my DNS-323 for 9 months now, and have been running it as just a NAS, no uPnp, AV, iTunes, etc. I have been accessing software / music / movies / pix directly from my MCE by just mapping DNS-323. It is currently accessable from my network. 5 machines on my network store the "My Documents" directory to the DNS-323.
I am using a D-Link DIR-655 as a router, and all the machines are connected via gigabit, or Xtreme-N wireless adapters. An HP Laserjet 1020 is connected via USB to the DNS-323, and is shared by all machines on the network. The current firmware on the DNS-323 is 1.03. I have recently come across the wiki, and decided to have a little fun with fun_plug (how appropriate.) I have sucessfully gotten telnet & Lighthttpd running.
I have medium linux knowledge, and have been running linux for about 7 years now. I can pretty much google any linux question I have. I have been running a web / samba / server with Mandriva for about a year now. It is running on a SuperMicro 370SSR motherboard, 1GB PC133 RAM (2x 512MB), Pentium III 1000Mhz, and 4 60GB Maxtor 2MB buffered drives (JBOD). Now for my question:
The Supermicro consumes some power with 4 drives and a 350W power supply. My website ( http://hizzouse.doesntexist.com ) does not get a lot of traffic, and all other functions have been moved to the DNS-323. It is now just a web server. With my photos, music, and random software stored on the DNS-323 I don't want to lose any of it. The airflow around the DND-323 isnt that great, but the HDD temps I have seen are not high enough to alarm me. Since I don't need any advanced web server functionality for my site, lighthtttpd would suit me just fine. Can anyone think of any paticular reason not to shelf my server and just use the DNS-323 as a web server? Can anyone think of any specific things I should watch out for to keep from bricking my DNS-323. Would the extra load of the web server negativly impact the DNS-323? (not factoring the bandwidth issues a webserver would bring about) Any tips or tricks you would suggest?

so did you ever get a answer to this? I am wanting to share pictures on my dns for the family as web pages by year and month, I have not found a easy solution, for a complete noob.

Hi,
I also wanted to share my digital photos to my family. 1st try was using the FTP server of the 323 but as a single photo of my camera can have up to 5MB this turned out to be too slow on my 512kpbs upstream.
So I decided to shrink down my photos to 800x600. I do this using a Python script (utilizing the Python Image Library). It runs on the 323 in a chroot'ed Debian but you can run it manually on the PC as well if you don't want to install Debian on the 323. It's easy and the documentation in the Wiki is good, really! If you don't want to do it entirely automatically, you can also use, for instance IrfanView in the batch mode for size reduction.
About the lighttpd: You can set up the lighttpd using fonz' fun_plug or - if you have Debian on the 323 - you can run it chroot'ed there - it offers a lot of additional possibilities.
I'm sure, you'll find a lot of photo album PHP scripts on the Internet that will run on the 323 as well.

Did you ever get your dir-655 working w/ lighttpd to enable streaming? I'm trying to do the same thing, and I have funplug 0.5 installed and working. I understand portforwarding (8080) should be used, but for some reason it's still not working. Please advise how exactly you set up your 655 port forwarding, and thanks in advance! Even screenshots if available

I emailed a screen capture of my dir-655 to you so you could see my port forwarding setup. I just ended up writing a php script to take care of the streaming. I have been running the dns-323 for over a year now and other than the occasional overheat when the door of the cabinet it is in gets closed, I have had no problems.
