Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck performing backups with Norton Ghost 12.0?  I get about 1.0GB into a backup, and Ghost gives an error about losing the connection to the drive.  I'm running Vista Ultimate, have firmware v1.03 for the DNS-323, and I'm trying to backup to a mapped share.  Any info or feedback would be appreciated.

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

In case this helps, I get the following error message and details:

Message:
Errors Exist.

Details:
-Errors exist.
--Unable to write to file.
---Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available.
---Unable to set file size.
----Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available.

Everytime, I get slightly past 1.0GB into the backup, then the whole thing craps out.  I've tried having Ghost split the backup into smaller files (512 MB, 1024 MB, 2048 MB, etc.) and the process ends after a little more than 1.0GB is transferred.  At this point, I'm mainly interested in whether anyone else has any experiences using Ghost 12.0 with the DNS-323.  Thankfully, I decided to use Ghost on a trial basis first, but I'm not quite sure where the source of this problem lies (Ghost, DNS-323, other).

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

I use Acronis True Image for backup purposes, splitting the files to 2 GB. The image could be created with PC working. Actually I don't have any Vista machine, but you can try Acronis and test it.

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

Thanks for the feedback.  I tried some more stuff out last night, and it would seem that something internal to the file binary is causing an issue.  I was able to backup to an internal HDD without any problems, but when I tried to transfer the file to the DNS-323, it stops a little more than 1.0GB into it.

Thanks for the True Image suggestion.  I haven't used this in the past, but I'll give it a try.

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

I'm transferring 4gb files to my unit and I do not have any problem, you should check your network connection, disable temporally any antivirus and/or firewall and try it again. Don't transfer big files through wireless.

why do you split these files to 2 gig? wanna burn em to dvd? are you afraid of file-systems not being able to handle files larger than 2 GB? xp, osx or linux have trouble reading larger files?

cheers

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

I wondered the same thing - my Acronis images have been 13+ GB and the DNS-323 has handled them with no difficulty.

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

if it helps more, I have transfered 3 ghost images of 5.0GB, 10.9GB and 82.7GB without a problem from USB2 hooked to laptop to NAS.
so even 4GB is not a limit. (yes that is single file of 82.7GB)

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

If it helps I am also using NG12 with no problems. I am splitting the images in DVD sizes if I want a DVD back up in the future but thats it.

The only problem that I had is that NG doesnt seem to recognize one file/folder back up but I think the problem is my dns acting weird lately.

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

Just to add to other comments here....I have been using Acronis v10 (and now v11) for quite some time using the DNS-323 without any problems. The primary backup that I do weekly is 30GB (ie one file is 30GB) and my nightly differential backup is about 1GB. These all run automatically without any intervention from me (and have done so for the past 6 months). The reason I use Acronis is that in the worst possible situation (ie a system drive failure) I can simply boot from the Acronis bootable CD (a Unix derivatrive of some sort) and then let Acronis find my network and my DNS-323 and then simply restore the system disk. Can Ghost do that? I know it couldn't do it when I was using Ghost years ago but I'm sure that times have changed since then.

Good luck with your diagnosis.

Regards,

Chris H

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

also, you can use Symantec Live State as an alternative to Norton Ghost. however, LiveState does not work with Vista but does work with XP. i have found that acronis does the trick for both. for now, acronis is my choice for recovery (though i have LiveState on my 2k3 server)

Acronis restore can find your DNS? thats very interesting.

I'm using Acronis Home 11.0 (previous 10.0) and it has never found my DNS using the bootable CD. It finds my hard disks OK and it lists my network but there is no DNS in the network, never has been. I have to keep a backup on a hard disk partition if I want to restore.

I've had no problems with Acronis finding my DNS-323.

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

possible that acronis does not have your network card drivers to actually go to the network and find it? mine does not thats for sure

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

I'm sure thats true. The network adapter it lists as being available is not the one on my motherboard.

Acronis lists my network adapter as a Realtek 8169 but its actually a 8111B, Acronis also says "Cable not connected".

Sorry to hijack the OP's thread.

Thats interesting. The Realtek 8169 is a very common chipset. I just tried running Acronis 11 on my daughter's machine that has the same chipset and Acronis found it without any problem. Perhaps the answer for you would be to go out and buy a "stock standard" network card say anything branded Intel...that's sure to work.

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

or maybe get the DOS drivers for your current network card and put them in the acronis boot disk (though i have yet to try this, but sounds good)

Re: Backups with Norton Ghost 12.0

Here is a different question related to Norton Ghost:
If I want to backup some files FROM the DNS TO my local harddrive (i.e. adding triple backup to some mission critical files) is that possible?
While trying out NG10, I can only choose between my two local partitions when selecting source for backup and then chose the DNS as destination but no the other way around...

if anyone got a nice solution to this, let me know! Thanks
