323 & Xbox 360

hi guys,

just curious. i know i can connect the 360 to the 323 but odd files like *.avi require conversion so the 360 can play them (i have Vista Ultimate as MC Server with Transcode360 to do the file conversion on the fly to play the odd files). can the 360 play the *.avi's (DIVX) without having to use the Vista Machine to connect to the 323 to stream to the 360?

my goal is just to remove the PC ALL TOGETHER when it comes to streaming audio / video / pix and just use the 323 as the media server

cheers

The DNS-323 doesn't have the Power to do the conversion, i think...

The other way would be to mod your XBox to some mediacenter-edition (i saw several a few weeks ago, have a look in your favorite search maschine with the keywords "xbox mediacenter", i found several)

im afraid that all i would come up with is XPMC or Vista MC (which is what i already have). this again is PC reliant which i am trying to avoid

Re: 323 & Xbox 360

Sorry no way around this.

Until such a time the XBOX360 fully supports avi files, all avi's must be converted.

The application on your PC converts to an 360 excepted format at streams it 'live' or 'on the fly' to the 360. There is NO chance that the DNS-323 has enough processing power to to the conversion task. So your stuck the way your doing it.

The only other option is to get a programme installed on your PC to convert all your avi's into a 360 format prior to watching, and store them on you DNS. There are programmes that will bulk convert avi's into 360 format (I used to do this when I had a 360) which you can leave running over night. So in the morning the 4-5 films will be in WMV format and happily play on the 360.

You not alone this this, any good 360 forum should point you in the right direction for the software.

I have the same issue with my Playstation3, files are on my DNS-323, but my PC has to convert them on the fly.

Until a time when the XBOX360 and Playstation3 is cracked, and custom software can be written to include avi codecs (xvid/divx) OR they decide to add the codecs via an firmware update (VERY UNLIKEL) you have to work around it. The original XBOX has been cracked for a while and can be setup to stream ANY media from the DNS-323, just waiting for the next-gen to be sorted.

Hope this helps, and that I havn't rambled on too much. lol

Re: 323 & Xbox 360

Howdy,

The Xbox 360 cannot be modded, but the orignal XBox can.

I have done this and run XBMC on it.

My 323 appears as an SMB share and I can play files directly from the 323 - no pc required.

The XBox Mod with XBMC plays just about every file type known to man.  Fantastic solution!

Cheers

Using another tool like Twonkey is what I do. I have installed on the DNS-323 and It will play all my audio (not the itunes), pictures and any wmv files that are stored on the NAS. Works pretty well.
