Total noob here...
I'm running a mac environment (mostly) and have the DNS-323 in the wired network partitioned into two volumes (Volume_1 and Volume_2). I've not done any hacking of the machine at all. I have my iTunes music folder on Volume_1 and mount it when at home for iTunes. I just set up a VPN to my Netgear firewall (Prosafe FVS318v3) and have that running so I have access to my home LAN. Now I want to mount my Volume_1 so I can use iTunes while traveling.
It seems utilityboy did part of this before (see SSHFS - An easy secure way access files remotely discussion) but I'm not sure that will work for me. What else do i need to do to make it work?

In the last month, I successfully used VPN to connect into my home network router (D-Link DI824VUP+) so that I could copy photos from my laptop (with the WinXP PPTP client) when travelling, onto the DNS323 back home. Once I got the VPN running, there was nothing else I needed to do to connect to the 323 - it presented exactly the same as if I was on the local network at home.
There is one note though - a typical home network is running at 100Mbps. If you are using ADSL, remember that you will probably have speeds like 512/128Kbps. I found that loading 1MB photos onto the DNS was OK (around 1MB/minute) from the VPN logged in from the other side of the earth, but retreiving data back off the DNS was very slow due to the upload speed of my home ADSL connection. Remember that your home ADSL download speeds are around 4 times faster than you upload speeds. It is the upload speed of your connection that will be used when you are retrieving data.

That doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm running on a Macintosh 10.4.10 and have the 323 partitioned into two volumes. When I'm at home the "connect to server address" identifies the entire drive, then I select a particular volume to connect to via SMB/CIFS protocol. Perhaps there are some differences here that are at play?

sharkez, when I use iTunes, the DNS323 just shows up under the shared library. I didn't do anything additional to get it to connect. I'm using WinXp and am not familiar with the Mac environment. If the VPN is good, then you should be presenting to your LAN as if you are a local user and be able to do anything that you do normally on the local network.

Not working for me unfortunately. I get "error -36" when I try to mount one of the volumes via a "favorite" stored link. My disk (ApacheNAS) does not show up when connected via the VPN like it does when on the local network (wired or wireless.) Could there be some sort of Port issue? Do I need to install he fun_plug? telnet?
VPN works for other things (access computers, printers, etc.)

One more thing: I can access the device web page while on the VPN, just can't mount it. Anyone with experience accessing the 323 via vpn (I use VPN 4 Tracker) on a Mac; I'd like to hear how you did it!
