Debian on DNS-313 (Proxy server)

Hi,

I am trying to set up a proxy server on my DNS-313.

Has anybody successfully installed Debian chroot on the 313?

My intention is to install a proxy server and use a ssl connection to route traffic via my DNS at home.

Any comment is welcome!

Re: Debian on DNS-313 (Proxy server)

what advantage we get from running debian on 313s?
is worth the trouble?
do we still get any sort of gui or is all done via conf files? if so is there webmin for 313 debian?

if someone was nice to post what is there to know about it that would be great.

TIA

Re: Debian on DNS-313 (Proxy server)

Hi, CrocAU,

Debian Etch on the DNS-313 is only a linux-core, every software you need and want, must download and install from Debian FTP-server.
(command: apt-get install package_what_you_need ...)
For a quick startup I only have built in telnet-server and midnight commander.
A very good playground for experienced Debian-x386-users (and also Ubuntu-users), but itīs not the right stuff for linux-newcomers.
Even it hasnīt a web-surface, every configuration must do by editing config-files.
But itīs possible to install webmin or swat, simply try it...
And the best is, it never can brick the box, it resides only on the harddisk. And when you want it no longer, waste it and restore the original crappy DLink-firmware...
