Thought it might be usefull to have a list of compatible harddisks for the DNS-313.
From my own experience I can say the following harddisk doesn't work:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 200Gigs
The harddisk I'm using now and which does work:
Western Digital Caviar SATA2 SE16 500Gigs

According to the paper documentation that came with my DNS-313 such a HCL should be on the website; I couldn't find it though :S
I use a Western Digital WD5000AAKS-2 Disk, which is working fine.

Samsung 750GB SATAII HD753LJ does *NOT* work, nor in 3.0gbps speed nor in 1.5gbps speed.
The WesternDigital 500GB WD5000AAJS does work with the DNS-313.

Tested with:
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400GB ST3400620AS,
- Seagate Barracuda ES 400GB ST3400620NS.
Both disks work fine, but the power saving doesn't function. I hope it will be corrected in new firmware.

My Samsung 400GB HD423LJ did not work at first but I removed it from the enclosure and re-inserted it and then it worked.

Today i was checking if there was a new firmware for my 313, but i only found this:
ftp://ftp.dlink.hu/dns/dns-313/document … 080104.pdf
This is a list of the compatible hard drives. I bet there are other drives that work as well, but they say these are okay.

Hi, virgil_dlv... Could you describe what you did to install that hard drive? I'm considering to buy just the same model as you.
Thanks! :-D

Nothing special - just slotted in the 1TB drive as per DNS-313 instructions, and ran the CD's installation process. I also did a firmware upgrade to 1.01b12...

great forum, i had no idea about samsung issues so i got 1TB and dns-313 and it works, i don't have issues with 2hours bootup or anything else that i can tell, without any tweaks on 100mbps network i get 6-7MByte/s up and down so it seem in line with healthy setups out there?
does anyone know specifics on this samsung issues?
btw unit came with fw 1.0 so i'm really puzzled

May be, Samsung has new Firmwares on their drives or you get a new hardware-version of DNS-313? But it´s a shame to D-Link delivering FW 1.0 on the boxes when 1.01b14 is available!
(even I have seen an hungarian 2.15 version!)
The german D-Link website explicitly points to the incompatibility between the DNS-313 and Samsungs 750/1000GB drives.

I have tried two Samsung drives and both work fine in the 313 - I flashed to the 1.01b14 firmware (which fixed my initial problem of not being able to delete a non-empty folder)
Samsung HD103UJ 1000Gb SATA drive
Samsung HD501LJ 500Gb SATA drive
I also tried a spare 200Gb Western Digital I had lying around as a spare to check for compatibility and it too works fine.
Western Digital WD Caviar SE WD2000
All these drives were set up and folders created on them to test and were mappable to my Vista based machine.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3750330AS SATA II 750 (Firmware SD15) - I have tried this drive, and despite it being on the compatibility list, the unit intermittantly (more than not) does not boot with the disk in it! If you can get it to boot, it seems to work ok, but if you power off you are screwed! The unit will USUALLY power on after all partitions have been erased from the disk, but not always, and who wants to wipe their disk everytime they reboot! When this happens the power light comes on, but no NIC, and no Disk light. Also it doesn't sound like the disk is spinning up.
Im really annoyed with this, I have thoroughly tested the Disk in other systems, and ran full seagate diagnostics, the disk is fine.
Its also brand new. The enclosure also works fine with a 320gb maxtor I have. I would seriously avoid this disk!

HDD: 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II (ST31500341AS)
Status: Worked partially, I had trouble completing the initial installation and had to repair the installation a few times before I got 'lucky'. After installation, the unit occasionally froze and became unresponsive which was a major nuisance. After experimenting with the MTU value, the unit became persistently unresponsive, repeating the repair process at least 20 times hasn't solved the issue like it did initially. So, currently it's out of order...
DNS-313 Firmware: v1.03b01, also have tried v1.01b14
Computer OS: Vista Ultimate x64
