DNS-313 Debian lenny experience....

Hi all,

First of all THANX to CharminBaer, you are my inspiration to keep my DNS-313 to live again.
I work with debian, and normally we use debian in our servers installations. So, work with debian
on the 313 is a dream jejejejejej.

I want to tell you what i have on my 313 now.

First of all, i download and then install CharminBaer debian version, 4.0 etch.

I upgrade thrue the debian Apt-get to debian LENNY. ALL FINE except
powermanagment. Now when i press the shutdown button it STOP the hard disk,
but never switch off the power like in etch. IDEAS????

After the debian update i start to install all what i need to have in my 313.

Like the original:
Samba
FTP
webmin
mt-daap

Extras: jejejejeje
asterisk

________________________________________

Problems iīve  found during my installations:

Samba - no problem

Ftp - no problem

Webmin - ok, let me explain that. Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix.
Using any modern web browser, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and lot of servers daemons...
I seek at the debian repositry webmin, but there no package available, so i sent a mail to the developer (Jamie Cameron)
because the debian package at the webmin page donīt explain clearly if it could work under an ARM system.
He response to my mail:
"Yes, it will work fine - Webmin is entirely written in Perl, so as
long as you have Perl built for your ARM system, you will be able to
install and run Webmin."

Then i downlad the debian package from the webmin webpage, and after a little fight with
dependencies, webmin works fine in our dns-313. I know that install webmin could be "stupid" for all
the people who know debian and how to configure all the samba an other stuffs, but i want to try if it works...
And it works, not too fast but WORKS. And for all of you who donīt know how to configure a samba
file server, an ftp server and other stuffs, thats a good point to start. Once you install it, you can access
the webgui under https://DNS-313:10000

http://surfnet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourc … 30_all.deb

mt-daap - now known as FIREFLY, like in the orginal dlink firmware
With Firefly you to could serve the widest variety of digital music content over the widest range of devices(itunes, amarok,....).
Let me explain the problems i found with that. First i try to use the version of the mt-daap in the debian etch repository.
Because thereīs no version of mt-daap under the lenny repository or i fail to found it. So i install the mt-daap package thrue
the apt. Ok all works fine, no problems with dependencies. I configure the mt-daap.conf and start the daemon. And inmediatelly
i see the server in my itunes as mt-daap on dns-313, IT WORKS. BUt... when i try to enter in the web gui the password
donīt work. After googling a little bit i found some people that said the version 0.2.4 have a bug with the web gui, the password
never works. So i decide to install a newer version. Probably you could go to the firefly page and compile and then install the application.
But i decide to do it trought the APT mode, easy for all of you who donīt know how to compile in debian.
So i search at the debian packages in the SID unstable version. Yes i know, i never recommend to install package from an unstable
repository, but in that case all the package that you could modify only affect to the Firefly server. So, i do it.
Yo can found the package and his dependencies at  http://packages.debian.org/sid/mt-daapd. After "wget"ting

libavcodec51_0.svn20080206-11_arm.deb    libflac8_1.2.1-1.2_arm.deb
libavformat52_0.svn20080206-11_arm.deb    libtheora0_1.0~beta3-1_arm.deb
libavutil49_0.svn20080206-11_arm.deb    mt-daapd_0.9~r1696-1.3+b1_arm.deb
libfaad0_2.6.1-3_arm.deb

It work like a charm, and much better than the dlink 0.2.4 version. You can access it on http://DNS313:3689
password: mt-daapd

EXTRA....
And now ASTERISK, for all of you who donīt hear about asterisk before itīs  the world's leading open source
PBXi, telephony engine, and telephony applications toolkit.  The company where i works is an Asterisk certified
partner, http://www.micropyme.com so i love asterisk and i use it all day. So the dns 313 itīs fantastic for that purpouse.
Itīs tiny, it
I have my dns 313 asterisk configured to act as an voip gateway. I have two IP phones connected to the Asterisk
on the DNS313 and i can call trhue my asterisk to land lines and of course all the services asterisk bring.
Voicemail, Ivr, Call Waiting, Call Transfer, etc...
First of all i think the dns coulnīt be powerfull to move asterisk, but it works for now.

Because of the lack of memory we have at the 313 i reccomend to stop the daemons of the
webmin and firefly. U could see here what iīm speaking about....

When I do a "ifconfig" there is too much packet lost. Coud you do a ifconfig in your dns-313 and post the result please??

Thanks

Re: DNS-313 Debian lenny experience....

Hello..

Buenas Scapitan que somos painsanos de lengua jejejejje, sigo en ingles por no romper
el hilo. Si necesitas algo mandame un Privado.

Here my trace of the lenny ifconfig...

egiga0    Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
          inet addr:192.168.1.30  Bcast:192.168.51.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

          RX packets:4584433 errors:0 dropped:1028463 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:3038706 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:256
          RX bytes:3389898372 (3.1 GiB)  TX bytes:1004878401 (958.3 MiB)
          Interrupt:1 Base address:0xa000

As you can see theres no errors in my case...dropped packets because sometimes i used it with
my laptop via a wifi interface, because of that the dropped packages.

Byes

Re: DNS-313 Debian lenny experience....

I posted a message a cpl of days ago asking if Optware or a chroot debian install would be my best option. After reading your post it sounds like a full Etch Debian install is my best option. Thanks for all the details in the post. Did you ever resolve the shutdown issues?

DNS 323 (Hardware B1, Firmware 1.06). 2x 1.5TB Seagate HDs.
Chroot Debain (Lenny) on USB (not reloaded). Edna server. USB print server. USB drives added to samba share. All init.d scripts in place.
Future projects: FFP reloaded then chroot on B1 hardware.
