native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hi @all,

Lenny for DNS-313 is ready, tested and provided here for Download:

http://www.msbd.de/dns313/DNS-313_lenny_24092008.tgz

with little tutorial:

http://www.msbd.de/dns313/Install_lenny_en.rtf

But still a little courious bug has this thing...

The first try to login with telnet gives the following:

telnet 192.168.178.24
Trying 192.168.178.24...
Connected to 192.168.178.24.
Escape character is '^]'.
Debian GNU/Linux lenny/sid
telnetd: /usr/lib/telnetlogin: Permission denied
.
Connection closed by foreign host.

Hm, why that...?

Connect th box over USB,

"ls -ln /mnt/dns313/usr/lib/telnetlogin" results in:

-rwsr-sr-- 1 0 102 5844 Jul 22 18:57 /mnt/dns313/usr/lib/telnetlogin

Seems to be correct.
Tried this:

cd /mnt/dns313 (or wherever the box is mounted...)
chown 0:102 usr/lib/telnetlogin
chmod 4754 usr/lib/telnetlogin

And it works, dunno why...

DNS-313 / native running etch4.0r3...
and by now running lenny with all the features and no probs.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

It is GREAT!

No offense at all, your other work was fantastic too and really appreciate it but - I am just curious - what's new/different in this comparing to using your etch compilation then do apt-get dist-upgrade? It worked fine for me and now on too lenny/sid.

Thanks very much for your work effort!

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

needs a bit of experiments, but it works for me with a original system

http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t2903-Disk … stros.html

if the pwrmgm doesn't work for you, drop me a line. i'll try to code alternative daemon.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hi,

This thing makes me crazy ...

I compiled a new kernel based on the latest source with the working sata driver (standby) and installed in the following way:
1. do the mkimage header magic
2. save the old kernel, and save the modules as well
3. copy and overwrite with the new kernel+modules
4. restart

then everything crashed. :-(

Revert all back to original via USB mount. Restart.

Still nothing. :-((

Format and upload lenny.

Still nothing. :-(((

Format and upload etch. See the mentioned issue with login never-ever seen with etch so far :-/ Fix as suggested.

Restart, etch logs in then do apt-get upgrade and now on lenny. :-)

Any idea what exactly happens after power up? My guess is that during boot up from flash some kind of checking is happen and in my case it found a problem prevented proper boot with the new kernel. Then did something else (e.g. modifying superblock) also preventing boot-up after restoring the old kernel. Though I don't understand why could not load lenny after format :-/

Nevertheless, thanks CharminBaer as etch is working very well, so well that even the dist-upgrade was successful.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

hi radir.
check the CONFIG_CMDLINE kernel option. on debian, root parameter should be /dev/sda3, on dlink's firmware it should be /dev/ram or something like that. i recommend building a serial console output, as it makes things easier (you exactly see what happens during the boot).

yeah, i did modify that ... but still failed.

Building a serial port, well, not sure it's worth me putting more time/effort in this box. It is very limited in hw/sw performance for my need, until I have better solution I can live with it. But will replace it as soon as possible ;-) My next project will be a 'real' NAS from spare PC components with RAID and gigabit ethernet with jumbo frame.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Fancontrol works of course.  The related prog /usr/bin/fancontrol is started from /etc/rc.local with some parameters:
(line 16:) nohup /usr/sbin/fancontrol -l 42 -h 48 -t 120&

nohup - the proggie stays alive, when the init process is finished,
-l 42 means, above 42°C runs the fan with medium speed,
-h 48 - above 48°C runs the fan with full speed,
-t 120 - the temperature will be tested every 2 minutes,
& - the proggie goes into background.

ChBear.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

i've made some modifications to the fand - it handles the temperature differently now:
if the temp is above the MAX, the fan goes full speed until it drops down to MAX. Then it will go medium speed, until temp is HYST
if the temperature was below HYST, the fan is not working, as long the MAX temp is not reached.

this way the fan is cooling the box more efficiently, and it isn't so noisy.

best args for the fand are -m 40 -M 45, but of course you are welcome to try different args and report the results.

btw: is the suspend working for you guys?

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

I donīt know where is the problem, but the dns-313 like work fine, the green led is turned on but dotīt get ip address.
If i connect the box by usb port and change the /etc/network/interfaces to set a fixed ip address the box didnīt start.
I have discover that the problem is the switch, when I connect the box to a Gb switch its canīt get a ip addres.
Itīs like that the OS canīt support the driver for the lan interface.

I make a ethtool egiga0:

Settings for egiga0:
Supported ports: [ TP MII ]
    Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                            100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
    Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
    Advertised link modes:  Not reported
    Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
    Speed: 100Mb/s
    Duplex: Full
    Port: Twisted Pair
    PHYAD: 1
    Transceiver: external
    Auto-negotiation: on
    Supports Wake-on: pumbs
    Wake-on: s
        SecureOn password: 64:00:01:00:01:01
    Current message level: 0x000002cf (719)
    Link detected: yes

and the ifconfig give me that:

egiga0    Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:80:c8:16:81:68
          inet addr:192.168.5.119  Bcast:192.168.5.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:18634 errors:0 dropped:424 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:9554 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:256
          RX bytes:26662937 (25.4 MiB)  TX bytes:668291 (652.6 KiB)
          Interrupt:1 Base address:0xa000

There is 424 dropped packet.

Any suggestion??

I realized you too using MTU 1500, and a bit confused regarding gigabit support. I tried to change MTU above 1500 in order to enable jumbo frame without success so a) is this due to lack of proper net driver from D-link b) or it's not a real gigabit nic dns is assemblied with???

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

hello bär! smile

i have a question:
i tried to "install" lenny without problems, it worked fine, but i'm no linux guru, so i tried to apt-get some packages, but the thing got so slow that i gave up. can you guide my hand in what packages to install?
i mainly want to use my dns-313 for ftp dowloads (so i don't have to use my power consuming desktop pc), and for torrents. i use both win and ubuntu, so i think i'll need samba too. and i'd like to manage my downloads from a nice gui, so i think i'll need some sorta vnc too.

do you think it's possible to build an os like this?

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hi,

Apt-get is slow. Very slow. While building the package database it is really very slow (due to RAM size I guess), but after it downloading and installation is pretty fast. So be more patient :-)

For torrent use the transmission package (sid version, 1.34) with built-in web interface. But I cannot advise on ftp.

Regards.

Charminbaer pleaseee could you add the TUN/TAP module for lenny, or can you tell me how to add
tun module. Openvpn does not work without that, i think itīs really interesting to access our nas from
the internet.

Thanx in advance.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

What about hard drive shutdown after some period of time? It seems to spin always.
In the native firmware there is an option, by default it stops after 10 mins.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Well now I have sshd up and running.

I would like the kernel source used to compile the kernel running and the config so that I can add the tun.ko or is it tap.ko module andmaby change the floating point emulator to that new experimental one that are supposed to be faster if it is not already in the kernel.
