Can anyone advise on this?
I have just bought a DLINK DNS-313, and a Seagate 7200.11 750 GB Hard Drive. I cant recall the EXACT model number for this thread, but it is definitely listed on the compatibility list (For the UK at least).
At first the enclosure powered on, but no HD light, or NIC light..On second powerup it started up fine, so I thought nothing of it. I copied my data to it, but soon discovered that when you power the device down, using the Web interface, it wont power up again. Same problem, power light, but no other lights, no disc spin up, nothing.
I found that by taking the disk out and putting it in my PC, and removing all partitions, the device would boot, and allow me to reformat it. But once again, switch the unit off, and it wont come back up again. I have NOW found that no matter what I do; erase the partitions, try 1.5GB jumper settings, the unit will not boot with this disk, it simply wont spin up or do anything!
I have tried this enclosure with a 320GB Maxtor, and it works FLAWLESSLY, and boots EVERY TIME.
The Seagate is a brand new disk, and I have run all of the diagnostics on it that are available, and it passes ALL OF THEM. It also works fine in a spare PC, and always spins up fine - I've tried dozens of times.
I have tried it all with firmware 1.01, and 1.02, factory resets etc, and have came to the conclusion that the disk is NOT compatible with the enclosure, despite DLINK's assurances.
Infact, if I google DNS-313 compatibility list, I get a PDF from the Polish DLINK site that does not contain this disk, yet the UK one does list it. In itself I find that a little suspicious.
I am on the latest firmware for the disk (SD15), and have infact found that Seagate had to advise mass firmware updates for this disk, due to earlier versions not using all of the cache correctly. I wonder whether DLINK tested this with the earlier firmware, and now with the update, its not compatible?
Has anybody had any success using this disk? I couldn't find an entry for it in the compatible disks thread, and would be interested to see if anyone had an earlier firmware of the disk and found it worked.
In the meantime I have ordered a Western Digitial 750GB disk that is another "compatible drive", and can only hope the device works with it.

My correspondance thus far with DLINK Suppport has gone as follows:
ME: My so-called compatible drive wont startup in your product
DLINK: Please hold down the reset pin to reset your device
ME: I've said already, that does nothing in this case. I can reset the device fine with another disk etc, but NOTHING seems to work correctly with this drive.
DLINK: We need to escalate this, please provide address etc
ME: OK, Here you go. Please also pass on my comments that I want an explaination as to why this compatibility list is incorrect. This isnt fair that I have wasted money on this.
DLINK: It sounds like the drive is not compatible with the enclosure. Please see the list of compatible drives here
ME: You havent read my email properly. I've told you this drive IS on the list, but wont work!
Still awaiting a response......
My Western digital drive arrives today, so hopefully that will work properly
