Hi everybody!
I've been a (quite) happy DNS-313 owner for a week now. My SATA drive (WD GP 500GB) was detected ok and the box is running quite nicely.
1) Is it possible to access the NAS from the different subnet without NAT?
2) How about running a USB printer server in the DNS-313? Either with the standard firmware or some other?
I have a home network like this:
DNS-313 NAS (static 192.168.0.20) | | internet -- ADSL router -- WLAN router -- Linux server + wireless clients 192.168.0.0/24 192.168.1.0/24
(The ADSL router has a static route to the 192.168.1.0/24 network.)
So the NAS box is attached to the ADSL router. A Linux server and all the client PC's are attached to the WLAN router.
This means that the PC's are in a different subnet as the NAS box.
It works if I use NAT on the WLAN router, but not without it.
Cheers!

Sorry. I just tried to cut the long story short because I realized that my original post was propably too complicated.
The other reason for the post was that I wanted to change the stupid subject of my post. I guess it can't be done?
So:
1) Is it possible to access the DNS-313 NAS from a different subnet without NAT?
2) Is it possible to run a USB printer server on DNS-313?
Best regards,
- Anssi

1) it depends on the type of service you want to use - for example, samba uses broadcast for discovering shares on a local network, and broadcast requests are dropped on the bridges/NAT. if you use NFS, it should work ok.
2) The dns 313 hardware and storlink linux kernel can act in a USB host mode. That's the nice part. The bad part is I was unable to make it work. Without storlink SoC documentation (which is expensive and NDA) i don't have enough knowledge to hack it...yet
(But it's possible to use the dns 313 as a DAS - via the USB cable, while the linux is running.

Hi! Thank you comments!
1) I could't reach the box at all from the other subnet. No WWW, telnet, samba... none. With NAT it worked. That's weird because I have a shared printer on a PC in the same network than the box and I can reach that, but not the NAS box.
2) So you think it's not a hardware limitation?
Cheers!

1) I don't think it's a device problem. Dunno.
2) Definitely no! The hardware is capable to act as a host, but i don't know how can i tell it to do accept the connected devices. Kernel sources provided by the storlink are a black magic...

Any news with it? It does not work even with debian on the box?

Helo,
I have access from anywhere (WAN) to my DNS-313 via SSH.
Router:
First to do is port forwarding to your DNS-313
WAN
Windows:
- use Putty for SSH access
- use Winscp for easy file transfer
Linux:
- SSH implemented. Type 'ssh -l {user} {IP}:{port}
- use mc for file transfers. Goto RIGHT>SHELL LINK>Type' {IP}:{port} -l {user}
Fedora 10
I make connection in network settings. CONNECT TO SERVER> {IP}:{port} + user + password. Thanks to that i can see windows + icons like in MS Windows .
