tracking ftp-user

hi there,

I have a list of ftp-users are allowed to connect to my dns-313. The only way I found out to see, if anyone is connected is the command TOP which I need to enter in telnet.

1. Is there any better way to find out, if or who is connected to my dns-313 or maybe a logfile of who entered a what time?

2. When I type in TOP it stays there like an active program running. When I use TOP five times there are five lines indicating that TOP is running five times. Is this actually the case? (When I restart the DNS-313 and TOP again, I only see this one running).

3. If TOP is the best way to see at least if somebody is connected to the dns-313 right now, how can I kill the command so that it doesn't consume any power of my dns-313?

Thanks for charing your knowledge to me.
