Hi,
It's often mentioned that samba is very slow.
Ive installed debian etch and typed "hdparm -tT /dev/sda"
The result was that:
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 138 MB in 2.01 seconds = 68.66 MB/sec
DNS-313:~# hdparm -t /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 14 MB in 3.21 seconds = 4.36 MB/sec
DNS-313:~#
That means that the etch can only read with 4 MB/sec from the harddik and of course the samba isn't faster than.
I use a normal WD Sata drive and if it's plugged into my pc it has rates about 50 mb/sec.
What are you thinking and what are our results ?
PS: Gairigo from the dl-support.de forum has a dns-323 (i have 313) and he has these results:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 108 MB in 0.51 seconds = 213MB/s
Timing buffered disk reads: 61 MB in 3.01 seconds = 20MB/s
Thats faster but also not very high speed.

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 132 MB in 2.00 seconds = 66.00 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 14 MB in 3.41 seconds = 4.11 MB/sec

Wow, with what config 20MB/s ? :-o
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 136 MB in 1.99 seconds = 68.34 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 16 MB in 3.65 seconds = 4.38 MB/sec
I get this speed through samba too - varies from 4 to 6MB/s.
Generally, lower speed in D-link is caused by weak controller, processor and memory. Its performance is definitely NOT comparable to a desktop PC.
