transfers od dns-313

hello

i have one question for you... what kind of transfers have you got on this NAS?

i have dns-313 with native debian 5.0.2 lenny and when i have transmission off then

samba: read 4-4.5MB/s
samba: write 4MB/s

ftp (vsftpd): write 5MB/s
ftp (vsftpd): read 5-6MB/s

with transmission on i have about 2.5-3MB/s ...

i think its little too small... at last this NAS have gigabit interface... well .... neutral

Re: transfers od dns-313

Well, processor cant handle larger io throughput. When using transmission, there are lot of disk activity, processor load and memory space taken and comping files while downloading torrents will be naturally slower.

You can google for dns-313 reviews and find out typical transfers rates for this devise smile

Re: transfers od dns-313

ok but why on pure debian lenny i have
DNS-313:~# hdparm -tT /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads:   132 MB in  2.02 seconds =  65.35 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:   22 MB in  3.33 seconds =   6.61 MB/sec
DNS-313:~#

and on original soft + ffp hdparm show:
Timing cached reads:   about 140 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:   about 12 MB/sec

and when i connect dns-313 to pc over usb i have
Timing cached reads:   about 3400 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:   about 29 MB/sec

when i copy large file from dir to dir on this same partition used MC i have transfer 1,8MB/s hmm max 3MB/s

this is absurdity

i use this debian lenny instalation: DNS-313_lenny_24092008. maybe is somethink new, new kernel, new sata module... hmm or maybe my dns-313 is damaged.

Re: transfers od dns-313

When you connect the DNS-313 with USB, the results are much better, because the DNS-313 does nothing at all, in this case:
The linux embedded linux system is not used, and your computer has direct access to the Hard Disk, through USB.

for your information, on my DNS-313, firmware 1.03 + funplug 0.5:

hdparm -tT /dev/sda
Timing buffer-cache reads:    70 MB in 0.51 seconds = 140548 kB/s
Timing buffered disk reads:   22 MB in 3.02 seconds = 7459 kB/s

Not far away from your results.

Re: transfers od dns-313

Hope this is correct spot to put this question up. Real novice when it comes to Funplug and Linux, but am keen to learn slowly slowly ! Long term goal would be to stream recorded shows from my DNS-313 to my TIVO unit. Saw some posts here that it was possible with the DNS-343. Think its possible with the DNS-313? Thanks.

on asus wl500GP + tomato i didnt have this problem.

i tested samba
3.0.24-6etch10
2:3.2.5-4lenny6

and now i`m compiling 3.4.0 but i dont know it is good way.

my config file:
------------------------[global]

Re: transfers od dns-313

one week work and.. (HDD WD 160GB SATA I 2.5" 5400) - ext2

when NAS is not load.

DNS-313:/# hdparm -tT /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads:   134 MB in  2.02 seconds =  66.34 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:   46 MB in  3.05 seconds =  15.08 MB/sec
DNS-313:/#

and with 100% load (compiling package)
DNS-313:/# hdparm -tT /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads:   110 MB in  2.29 seconds =  48.03 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:   28 MB in  3.11 seconds =   9.00 MB/sec
DNS-313:/# hdparm -tT /dev/sda

and with transmission on
DNS-313:/# hdparm -tT /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads:   120 MB in  2.01 seconds =  59.70 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:   38 MB in  3.09 seconds =  12.30 MB/sec
DNS-313:/#

--------------------

Transfers: (FastEthernet network)

when transmission is off

vsftpd(read) - 11MB/s
vsftpd(write) - 6,0MB/s

samba 2.2.12 (read) - 6,0MB/s
samba 2.2.12 (write) - 5,4MB/s

--------------

when transmission is on:

vsftpd(read) - 8,1MB/s
vsftpd(write) - 3,8MB/s sad

samba 2.2.12 (read) - 5,7MB/s
samba 2.2.12 (write) - 4,7MB/s

at the moment i have debian lenny 5.0.2 with kernel and module from oryginal dlink soft (1.03) + vsftpd 2.0.1 + samba 2.2.12 + transmission 1.73

i will test it for few days and wait for transmission 1.74, then i`ll release my debian lenny for you (if you want ofcourse smile )
