How to acces to my DNS 313 from another computer?

Hi!

I installed my DNS 313 with a HD of 2TB, and everything seems to work OK: i can acces it from my laptop through the wifi or USB, I have even manage to get itunes working with the music in it, but I'm quite frustrated because I don't know how to acces to the NAS when I'm in another computer, for example, at work.

This is the first time that I'm using a device like this, so I'm thinking that the problem can be an easy and stupid one. I've registered to gen this dynamic dns, so when I try to connect to the server from work I can get to the place where it ask me to enter the username and password, and I've been even able to change the configuration. But I do not know how to acces to the files I have in there!!!

Any help?? Thanks a lot in advance!

Re: How to acces to my DNS 313 from another computer?

You can either use the native DNS-313 FTP server, or SFTP using SSH, or through a web server, deploy a VPN between your remote location and the DNS-313.

- To access your files through the native FTP server, you just need to open port "21" on your gateway. But this solution is not very secured, because password and data are not encrypted. You will be able to manage your files with an FTP client (Internet explorer or Filezilla, for example)

- To access your files through SFTP using SSH, you need to install Funplug (see http://dns323.kood.org/howto:ffp, chapter "OpenSSH Secure Shell Server") ... and to open port "22" on your gateway. You will be able to manage your files with Filezilla, with "server type = SFTP using SSH2".  This solution is more secured.

- To access (readonly) your files through a web server (like here), you need to setup lighttpd, available through Funplug (see http://dns323.kood.org/howto:ffp, chapter "Lighttpd Web Server"). This solution is not secured, because everybody who knows your public address (and the TCP port on which lighttpd is running) has access to the files is sharing. But you can choose which folders to share.

- To deploy a VPN, you need to install openvpn on the DNS-313 (cf Working: Openvpn 2.0.9), and use openvpn (Windows or Linux) on the client side. You will be able to access everything, like at home. But this is the most difficult of all theses 4 solutions.

Re: How to acces to my DNS 313 from another computer?

Thanks for the answer! I see that it is not as easy as I thought (I don't really understand why all the fuss about creating groups and users and all that stuff in the DNS313) but I'll try to get it working!

I'll let you know what happens!

Re: How to acces to my DNS 313 from another computer?

Users and groups, are for the native FTP server (solution 1), or for the Samba file share (sharing files over the local network through Windows network drive).

As far as I know, the others solutions don't need it. (At least, I don't use them ... I'm only using the "root" user I have setup, as explained in ffp howto section)

Good luck !
