Well maybe it's just a matter of HDD firmware revision, I didn't really pay attention to this.
But at first, my first attempt failed. The formatting as a NAS went on, but stalled a roughly 55-60%. So I tried a different approach. I tried formatting it inside the DNS-313, but using it as a mere USB External drive, and the formatting went without a hitch (using Windows 7).
Then I tried again to initialize it as a NAS, and everything went fine. Now it's up and running fine.
I tried everything in every possible situation and nothing. I even tried 2.01 firmware for DNS-313, but nothing.
Well... It can be firmware. Model of my HDD is WD15EARS-00Z5B.
Partner of my company also had problems with this model in DNS-313, I learned that yesterday.
Since we don't have confirmed working solution, I suggest to others not to buy this HDD 'till situation is resolved.

Hey there
I've been thinking in getting a 2TB hard drive for my dns-313, does anyone have any experience with that?
Thanks.

I can confirm that WD Caviar WD5000AADS - 500GB (green edition) does NOT work on DNS-313.
Have tried NTFS, EXT2, EXT4 and no format at all. Formatted via USB, Linux Ubuntu, XP diskmanager..I give up. Works as USB, but not present in the network. Also tried with different firmwares. Green light, and cannot reset, and cannot be found. I switched back to an old WD 320GB, and it worked fine again.

Hi guys,
just got a 313 B1 firmware 2.0 and a WD caviar green 2TB EARS (64mb cache).
Did anyone make it works?
Actually I can't install it (due to os incompatibility) and I'm really gettin' afraid it won't work...
The compatibility sheet specifies compatibility for the EADS series (32mb cache) but doesn't mention EARS series.
and...is it possibile, in 2011, to not have mac drivers to get it working on macosx??it's a shame

Great news guys!
I tried in plugging dns via usb: windows didn't see it but mac has mounted and asked me to format it.
I create a partition of 2TB FAT32 mbr and now it works both on mac and win.
I have to wait for a router to try nas complete functions but I think it's clear that (at least mine) DNS-313 (B1 firmware 2.0) works with WD20EARS/64MB.

Here I am again.
I installed that nas and finally I succeed with a WD20EARS...
everything seems to work fine.
Anyway I had to format hard disk many times, both on mac and win to get it working.
