Using the serial port

Hi,

I'm new to this forum (and to Linux as well). Thanks to help from Mijzelf along with some reading I have Debain 5.03 up running on my NSA-220+.

Now after getting some standard daemons like samba, lighttpd, vsftpd, rsync working I want to use the serial port next. Following the instructions on NAS Central and here I built the 3.3V TTL <> RS-232 converter and plugged it in the NSA-220+.

I can see syslog messages on the serial console and can log in via it as well. After some Googling I figured out how to send text from telnet console to the serial console and vice versa using...

  echo 1234 Hello! > /dev/ttyS0

and

  echo 5678 Hello! > /dev/pts/0

So far so good but I want to use the serial port as a general I/O to communicate with some external hardware but I can not figure out how to get bi-directional communication in "minicom" so I assume I'm doing something wrong here.

Can the serial port be used as a general I/O when it's configured as a serial console or must I disable that first?

Any help apprectaied...

/KC

Re: Using the serial port

Just in case anyone else is looking for the same. Mijzelf helped me sort it out over at the NAS-Central...
