Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Thanks andry for the instructions!

After compiling a kernel with NFS support and installing nfs-kernel-server, my NFS upload speed dropped from ~5 MB/s with unfs3 to ~2 MB/s with kernel nfs. The HDD in DNS-313 is trembling continuously during upload.
Using "async" mode upload rates are about 4.5 MB/s.

Is there any way to increase upload speeds with nfs-kernel-server?

It's hard to do without recompiling. You can try to change rd.gz for this.

I have a kernel with Ext3 and NFS for revB. My kernel has the option root=/dev/sda3 instead of root=/dev/ram0.
I also have empty rd.gz and rootfs.tgz.
I can upload my files, if necessary.

Hi andry,
Thank you for your instructions for compiling new kernel.
After reading all posts, it seems that you're the only one who has a working debian lenny for the Rev B. Could you please upload these files as compiling doesn't seem to work for me...

I'm sorry for the long answer. Ftp-server was blocking by the Internet
provider. At 27.01.10 17:00 MSK  it works. Please try it again.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

To generalize it all (mean all, that related to rev.B Debian installations) I wrote a manual.
ftp://darion.org.ua/pub/dlink/DNS_313_Debian.pdf

And script available here:
ftp://darion.org.ua/pub/dlink/dlink.sh

Server is in Kyiv(Ukraine) so speed might disappoint you. If it's possible for somebody, to make a mirrow somewhere.

Thank you all for helping me.
I have followed darion's instructions, script runs successfully...but debian still don't boot.
I will try the following:
1. I will try "Extra conguration" in manual, although the DHCP works fine for me with the factory 2.00 firmware - I have set static DHCP lease for the NAS
AND/OR
2. I will replace boot files with andry's (from ftp://minai.ath.cx:821/DNS-313_boot_rev_b_andry.tgz) into darion's tar.gz

Let's see which will work...

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

My .tgz is just a file made like this:
tar czf DNS_313_Debian.tgz /mnt/exh3
so, there might be a problem. I have used CharminBaer's image with .boot files from here ftp://minai.ath.cx:821/DNS-313_boot_rev_b_andry.tgz

Try to do like this, I've tested it and it have to work.

Hi! Is login only possible through serial console? Or should I able to login using PuTTY as well?
No successful login for me although ports for telnet and SSH are opened for the NAS...

Try to use telnet at first. Putty must work. Is the green LED powered, when you are trying to login?

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

So, there is something going wrong. LED should be green. I've twice situation, when after rebooting several times (more then 30 i think) and do not making any changes in debian configuration, it just won't boot - led is blue, nothing related in logs. After first time this happened, i reformat all the hdd and reinstall lenny. After second time, i just plug the NAS via USB to notebook with linux (fedora 11) and made disk check via disk utility. It boots after this. May be situation related to ext2 partition format and needing to check disk every x-th boot or after specific days of working.

Is there some kind of configuration setting I hawe to set up to make it work in gigabit mode?
or do i hawe to use another router with 100mbit and portforward?
Annoying that this forum seems to be so active :'(

By the way i compiled and installed transmission latest version it brings the unit to it's knees.
i'm trying to get that enhanced ctorrent and yobctcs or what it's named to work.

Have you solved your issue? I have a similar problem. Everything works fine with a 100Mb switch and no network access when using a Gigabit switch either in static or DHCP address..

The article and the script error. Archive is packed with full path (/ mnt/exh3). Extract to root path (/).
If this is correct then everything works correctly.

PS. When the system boots led is BLUE, after boot is GREEN.

When you say

Archive is packed with full path (/ mnt/exh3). Extract to root path (/).

Do you mean that in the script the MOUNT POINT argument should be changed to root (/) or that the archive should first be moved into the root folder and the LENNY argument should be /Debian_lenny_revB .tgz?

Apologies for the clarification, I'm still finding my way with Linux and the command line. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Sorry to drag this up again but did anyone get a Debian installation running on the Rev B? I've a bundle of files and have tried making an image over and over but no joy with it unpacking when the drive starts. The new GPL code is in a different structure to the old one which has confused me totally. ANy help gratefully received.

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hi,

I’ve got NAS DNS-313 rev.B and Netgear 1000 Mbps router. Unfortunately it doesn’t work properly in this configuration. I receive IP nut PING doesn’t return to me – it loses its packages.

There isn’t such a problem on 100Mbps router.

I installed OFW on NAS once again and the problem on 1000 Mbps doesn’t occur. It seems that some drivers from LAN card aren’t compatible in my compilation.

Can someone help me change these drivers and improve NAS to work in 1000 Mbps web? My knowledge of Linux is limited.

Help, please wink

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hi!

I hope, that this forum is not dead yet... I got a DNS-313, and now I would like to setup a Lenny on it. But, the page of Charminbear's install guide (http://www.msbd.de/dns313/Install_lenny_en.rtf) is dead since a while.

Could somebody please send me the referred doc?

And an other question: the fan control (switching it automatically at the appropriate time) and the HDD control (switch off the HDD if not in use) under Lenny has been solved already somehow? I was told, that these things could be problematic if I use Debian on this gear...

Thanks in advance for your help.

As I thought, not too much scrambling... smile Anyway: meanwhile I get contact with Charminbaer, and he kindly restored the original state, so the links are alive again.

Just in case of need wink

Who ever left the assembly of Charminbaer? Can you put it on file sharing? Got the dns-313, I want to make it the archive repository, official firmware corrupt files.

Sorry for bad english: (

Re: native Lenny for DNS-313 is ready.

Hi,
The links are obsolete for the debian images suitable for DNS-313 rev. B.
However I managed to solve the issue, and have a working Debian Lenny for my DNS-313 revB, called debian_v2_revB.tar.gz
The image and all below mentioned files are downloadable from here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pkwj48zttkjr9dv/HSBcQ6g7xV

I took the "zImage" from the file DNS-313_fw_B_201b04v3_20100621.zip and "rd.gz" and "rootfs.tgz" from DNS-313_B1_FW_v2.00_GPL.tgz
Then after downloading image tools from here: http://www.msbd.de/image_tools.tgz I did the workaround suggested here http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic. … 489#p33489 on this forum
The result is boot_313_revB.tgz which, used with debian_v2.tar.gz gives the image debian_v2_revB.tar.gz
Then I used tthe script of darion http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic. … 820#p32820 which I've modified a bit to install this image completely.
The network interface will use dhcp, however you have to add nameservers into /etc/resolv.conf manually.
Update:
Also, I'm trying to build my own kernel for rev B. For rev A, the machine type is "Gemini"... I don't know yet what type is rev B...Could someone post a "dmesg" on a rev B to find it out?
My guess is that it is AMICO ARM920T or StorLink SL2312??
UPDATE: now I know it is SL2312, from line CONFIG_ARCH_SL2312=y of the kernel config file...
