Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

I bought my unit at the end of November and with two exceptions it does what it says on the tin.
However there is a bug in the firmware which prevents the archive bit being re-set. This screws up my back-up software. the bug has been acknowledged by D-link technical support. They say that ihis will be fixed in the 1.02 firmware update. This is good except that they have yet to release 1.01 firmware and can't tell me when 1.02 might be available.
The second issue is that the unit does not appear to support the 'offline files' function from XP Pro, giving an error about the mounted file system not supporting the extended attributes. I am currently exchanging e.mails with the D-Link tech support guys but they won't admit there is a problem.
By contrast my Buffalo Teraststion works fine with no issues with both the archive bit and making files available offline.
Has anyone else experienced these issues and are there any workarounds ?
Thanks

I had same problem. Reason is that the default smb.conf contains the line:
force create mode = 0777
I don't know why DLink has made this the default. Here is what I did to solve the problem:
1. Install fun_plug (see instructions elsewhere, e.g. the Wiki)
2. telnet to the DNS, then:
3. cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/etc
4. start the vi text editor: vi /mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/etc/smb.conf
4a. Start editing by pressing i (for Insert mode), then:
4b. comment out the "force create mode = 0777" line i.e. prepend the line with a hash sign (#)
4c. add the line: map archive = yes to the "[global]" section
4d. Save and exit by pressing "ESC : w q ENTER"
5. start the vi text editor: vi /mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/etc/profile
5a. Start editing by pressing i (for Insert mode), then:
5b. Append the line : cp /mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/etc/smb.conf /etc/samba/
5c. Append the line : smb restart
5d. Save and exit by pressing "ESC : w q ENTER"
(Section 5 makes the change permanent on each boot)
After rebooting, the archive bit should work.
BTW, this bug seems to become fixed in FW1.04: http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic. … 7540#p7540 (search for "archive")
Hope this helps

Hello! Every time, when I restart my DNS-313, it doesn't remember
the Network Access Settings.
I have set up users different rights to folders, but after restart (or power failure)
there is only 1 line in the Network Access List: all user has R/W access to the full drive.
It is very unsafe for me.
Has someone the same experince, or what is the solution?

Hi,
I´ve the same probs like rocky. Network Access Settings are gone as soon as the device is restarted or un- and replugged.
D-Link support is informed but did´nt reply so far.
Any ideas?
Thank´s in advance.
Best regards from Germany

Hi all,
Thank you to uyuni for a great post.
Two questions though uyuni, if you would be so kind as to help further:
your experience is with the 323. Do you know if your fix applies to the 313 as well and do I need a 313 specific version of fun_plug ?
Thanks

See below my email to dlink support after reading the above, and their reply. I will try the new firmware shortly.
Dear Customer,
Your Request:
I have found that the Memeo backup software that you supplied with the dns-313 (even after upgrade to the latest version) does not work with this nas device.
From the link http://dns323.kood.org/forum/p8750-2007 … 00:48.html you are aware of the issue. Can you please give an approx date for the Firmware revision that will fix this?
has been answered as follows:
Dear David,
there is a new firmware that fixes this issue, however we are still awaiting approval from our product managers to publish this on our website.
You can download it directly from our FTP site by following this link:
ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dlinktemp/dns-313.tar.gz
After installing this, you should have no problems with the backup software. Please note that it needs to be uploaded to the DNS-313 as is, so do not unpack files from the archive first.
Best Regards,
D-Link Support
We hope that this answers your question and that your request is now resolved.
This information is also available through our Support Portal at http://service.dlink.biz
Regards - your D-Link Support Team
P.S. If you have further questions regarding this request,
please reply to this eMail without modifying the subject text.

I have also updated to this firmware:
ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dlinktemp/dns-313.tar.gz (21-12-2007)
I still can't make any back using memeo (dns-313).

Btw, the above new firmware disables telnet. If you want telnet access back, stick this into a file called "fun_plug" on the root of the storage partition:
#!/bin/sh /usr/sbin/xinetd -stayalive -reuse -pidfile /tmp/xinetd.pid &

Hi all, I've tried to update my firmware with this dsn-313.tar.gz through the web interface, but my DNS-313 refused it. Are you sure, this is a correct firmware? Or is there any other special procedure for this firmware update?

Hi,
same here, this firmware file is rejected by the unit with the following error message:
Firmware Upload Error!
The uploaded file was not accepted by the DNS-313. Please return to the previous page and select a valid upgrade file.
My current firmware is the v1.00 09/18/2007...
Any idea ?

I found the 1.01b06 on rapidshare:
http://rapidshare.com/files/83186439/DN … _.rar.html
I believe you should extract this rar file to a directory and then run the "ClicknConnect.exe" file and choose modify.
But this is a beta (remember this, there is a reason why d-link dont publish this)
My friend says that 1.01b06 fix problem with interupted transfers and powersafe mode now works
but he has discovered problem with ftp server that didn't exist with earlier fw.

Hi all,
Finally I've bypassed of the firmware update problem. The procedure is simple. You need to replace system.tgz from the D-Link 313 installation with the new firmware and remove partitions from from the storage disk. At first backup your data of course. After that, install it again with ClickAndConnect and you will have new firmware on it.
I hope it will help someone

All,
As I noted in my first post (22/12/07) : When I fist encountered the problem with not being able to set the archive bit I contacted D-Link tech support. After a little to and fro-ing they acknowledged the problem:
"our engineers have acknowledged the problem and are working to implement the solution in a future firmware. As the next firmware release (v1.01) is imminent, the fix will unfortunately not be available until 1.02 is released.
I am afraid there is no workaround in the short term, and apologise for any inconvenience this might cause.
Best Regards,
D-Link Support".
I believe the support people as I have installed firmware 1.01 and still have the archive bit problem.
It is therefore concerning that D-Link are telling Davhe (09/01/08) that the v1.01 firmware will solve the archive bit problem.
There is also the issue of the unit not supporting extended attributes which means that I can't use make files available offline.
All in all not a great advert for D-Link's product testing .......
