Can't connect with Vista??

I just got a new PC with Vista Premium, but I just can't create a network mapping to my DNS. Connection is OK because I can get to the admin console, but for some reason it seems that my username/password is not approved when I give them from Vista's network drive mapping dialog. On my old XP laptop everything works just fine with the same address and username. What should I do??

Re: Can't connect with Vista??

There is a problem with the user authentication in Vista. I have the same exact problem. When I removed the limitation, you can map the drive fine.

I think firmare 1.04 fixes that but is still Beta so no way I am installing that

Re: Can't connect with Vista??

I think I this will help.

Some flavors of Vista don't have secpol.msc, so if you using Vista Home.  You'll need to modify the registry directly to make it work.  The following key needs to change.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel

Its default value is 3, which is for NTLMv2 only.  Change it to 1 for "Send LM&NTLM - use NTLMv2
session security if negotiated"

Or  you can try the following.

Changing the security settings.
1. Click "Start" -> "All Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "Run".
2. Type "secpol.msc" and click "OK".
3. Allow Windows to open the Security Policies window by clicking "Continue".
4. Click "Local Policies" and choose "Security options".
5. Right click on "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level" and select
"Properties".
6. Change the value "Sent NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM&NTLM - use NTLMv2
session security if negotiated".
7. Click "Apply" and "OK" and close the Security Policies screen.
8. Reboot your computer.
You can now map a network drive to your computer with the steps below:
1. Right click on "Computer" and select "Map network drive...".
2. Select the drive letter you want to use (for example "Z:").
3. Type the folder which you want to map (for example "\\DNS-323\Volume_1").
4. Click "Different user name" and type the username "Guest" (or another username)
and the password which is configured for the DNS-323 share.
5. Click "OK" and Click "Finish".
Your DNS-323share is now mapped to a driveletter on your computer.

Re: Can't connect with Vista??

Hi.
I'm trying to follow the instructions above (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel) but I can't get it to work. It's Vista home edition and I changed (LMCompatibilityLevel) to 1. But I only have the fields "Data" (here I changed to 1) and then I have two checkboxes: "Base" Hexadecimal and another one "Decimal". I don't have "Send LM&NTLM - use NTLMv2
session security if negotiated".

Could someone please help out and help me fix this?

Do I need to reboot the computer and/or the DNS-323 after?

When you're modifying the registry directly, you aren't going to see what the values translate to, as you would using secpool.msc.  Therefore, you should set the "Value data" = 1 and use Hexadecimal as a base.  Then, reboot.  Hopefully it works for you smile

Thanks for your reply. I tried what you said - same problem. When I try to use the "D-Link Easy Search Utility" I get a password prompt although I haven't a password set on the 323. It's open for all users...

Please advice.

What "firewall problems" and how did you solve them? I have an identical problem but my firewall does not indicate anything...

I performed the registry changes but I still get the requirement to input user and password and predictably it fails.

The Dlink easy search appears in the Firewall list of allowed applications.

Thanks,
/Al

Re: Can't connect with Vista??

why not just disable the firewall all together?

normally new routers have built in deny rules (firewall) for external to internal traffic. and if your local LAN has no wireless, then your good with out a firewall. and if you do have a wireless, then MAC address lock the machines to the wireless router.. again, your good

i understand security, however, look at it from up top and its quite simple

Hi,

I do have wireless and I use MAC and fixed IPs to trusted PCs but still, firewalls are up on all machines and the only ones not able to access the 323 are the Vista ones. Now, after the registry hack,  it seems that the problem was pinpointed by Votum to the firewall and I'd very much like to hear how it was fixed.

Based on everything that's been said here, I am one action away from using the 323 with Vista. Can't wait to hear how the Vista firewall interferes with the NAS and how it was fixed...

***** So Votum, how did you solve the Vista firewalll problem? *****

Best,
Al

Re: Can't connect with Vista??

Sorry lalex for a very, very late reply but here goes... On my daughters machine (running on Vista) I turned off the "Personal firewall" on her Norton Internet Security. I have the same problems when trying to connect to work with my machine (running on XP) using VPN unless I shut off the "Personal firewall" on Norton. Maybe you already have found the solution. I hope so since I'm so late with my reply. Sorry.
