I think I this will help.

Some flavors of Vista don't have secpol.msc, so if you using Vista Home.  You'll need to modify the registry directly to make it work.  The following key needs to change.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel

Its default value is 3, which is for NTLMv2 only.  Change it to 1 for "Send LM&NTLM - use NTLMv2
session security if negotiated"

Or  you can try the following.

Changing the security settings.
1. Click "Start" -> "All Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "Run".
2. Type "secpol.msc" and click "OK".
3. Allow Windows to open the Security Policies window by clicking "Continue".
4. Click "Local Policies" and choose "Security options".
5. Right click on "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level" and select
"Properties".
6. Change the value "Sent NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM&NTLM - use NTLMv2
session security if negotiated".
7. Click "Apply" and "OK" and close the Security Policies screen.
8. Reboot your computer.
You can now map a network drive to your computer with the steps below:
1. Right click on "Computer" and select "Map network drive...".
2. Select the drive letter you want to use (for example "Z:").
3. Type the folder which you want to map (for example "\\DNS-323\Volume_1").
4. Click "Different user name" and type the username "Guest" (or another username)
and the password which is configured for the DNS-323 share.
5. Click "OK" and Click "Finish".
Your DNS-323share is now mapped to a driveletter on your computer.

It just says that "can't find secpol.msc"??

When you're modifying the registry directly, you aren't going to see what the values translate to, as you would using secpool.msc.  Therefore, you should set the "Value data" = 1 and use Hexadecimal as a base.  Then, reboot.  Hopefully it works for you

Firewall problems on the Vista computer.

why not just disable the firewall all together?

normally new routers have built in deny rules (firewall) for external to internal traffic. and if your local LAN has no wireless, then your good with out a firewall. and if you do have a wireless, then MAC address lock the machines to the wireless router.. again, your good

i understand security, however, look at it from up top and its quite simple

Sorry lalex for a very, very late reply but here goes... On my daughters machine (running on Vista) I turned off the "Personal firewall" on her Norton Internet Security. I have the same problems when trying to connect to work with my machine (running on XP) using VPN unless I shut off the "Personal firewall" on Norton. Maybe you already have found the solution. I hope so since I'm so late with my reply. Sorry.
