I tried going into terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
I can now get Time Machine to recognize my dns 323 but I get an error message as soon as it tries to back up to it. Any thoughts?

Did you follow that guide to setup everything correctly (like creating the sparse image file, etc.) ?
