am I cursed? disk crash + no RAID 1 recovery

Hi folks,

I've received my DNS-323 today. Firmware is v1.05, which looks OK (yes, I've read the "known issues" section of the wiki) so I didn't try to upgrade to 1.06.
Together with the 323, I've received a pair of Samsung Spinpoint F1 1 To drives which I've configured in RAID 1.
I've spent the day playing with my new toy, installing ffp etc. I've copied a few GB of random stuff (really random as I was at work ^^), everything was fine.

Note I've bought the 323 mainly as a backup solution, hence the RAID 1 disks.

Back home, I've plugged my 323 into my router. I've then spent quite some time to make the e-mail notifications work... and failed. I gave up and started backuping my data. Less than 2 GB later, the copy stopped with a write error and, surprisingly, I've received this e-mail:

"Hello Administrator,

Left Hard Drive Has Failed

Sincerely,
Your DNS-323"

Oooops... The left blue LED had turned orange...

Fortunately, I had an extra disk identical to the one that had failed. I shut down the 323, replaced the disk. The 323 asked me to format the disk which had been replaced. OK, please, do. Reboot.

Hey, reboot!?

After some while it was obvious the DNS had crashed. No web access, no SSH. I couldn't even turn it off with the power button. I had to unplug the PSU :-/

When the 323 came back to life, everything looked normal. The status showed the disks were OK and had been properly synchronized. Cool.

Cool? Hell no! All my data have been wiped! The disks are empty! While I can tolerate a new disk dies a few hours after being put in service, it's absolutely unacceptable to have a RAID 1 unit destroy all data which are supposedly mirrored!!

The 323 seems to run fine now, but as the RAID 1 mirror is totally unreliable, what should I do now? Should I configure my disks as 2 separate volumes and backup my data myself????

Thanks for your help! I'm a bit :-| right now.

There are lots of reports of the 323 formatting the wrong drive when you replace one - so when you inserted the replacement maybe it formatted the other one.

Anyway, many people do advocate running the drives 'stand alone' - no raid then using something like rsync or backup scripts to copy files at specified intervals.  There are many examples of how tro do this on this forum and on the wiki too.
