1.05 upgrade to 1.06 firmware,

Been real happy with my DNS-323,  no fancy tricks on it, just basic setup!

PLays nice on home network shared between 2 Macs and work laptop, streams music via iTunes to all and lets my Beyonwiz DPS1 stream movies over wireless connection.

Dilemma at moment is that I'm running 1.05 f/ware and see that 1.06 is out. What will I gain from upgrade?  Is it vital with this upgrade to backup all date?  I have to 750Gb drives with about 500Gb of music, movies etc on each.  Don't really have space elsewhere to backup and would not be happy to lose the lot.

cheers

Re: 1.05 upgrade to 1.06 firmware,

You can find a discussion of the 1.06 firmware here http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4010 .  I hope you find something to help with your decision.  Please search the forum before starting new threads.

As a general comment, I'd say if you don't see anything that excites you in the changelist for 1.06, then don't bother upgrading.  You probably won't gain anything, but you might run into new bugs.

Re: 1.05 upgrade to 1.06 firmware,

cheers, had done quick search and seen nothing about data loss and need to reformat etc.

Not a lot in changelog to excite, more a case of keeping up in case next revision has new items.  But as you suggest, if it ain't broke ......

Re: 1.05 upgrade to 1.06 firmware,

First - I would consider it vital to backup all data before an upgrade, any upgrade - in fact, not having a backup on a day to day basis, is placing yourself at risk for data loss.  It's really your choice, and relates to the value you place on the data, even if you have all the music & movies on the original CDs & DVDs, there is still a lot of time invested in ripping it, etc.

1.06 removes several of the much ballyhooed "security holes", adds secure ftp and UPS support - it does not require a format if moving from 1.04 or 1.05, some people have reported problems with disks and had to downgrade.

Yeah, it's always tricky to decide when keeping up to avoid a more painful upgrade later becomes more important than disturbing a stable system.  BTW, didn't mean to come off as harsh regarding the "search first" comment, just that a lot of people don't seem to think of that.

cheers for that!

time has been a factor in ripping movie collection, many hours have come from video (how scary is that, especially hours of old home movies)

might even look at another 323 as the backup to the one I have now!  cheap enough on eBay for it to be possibility
