Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Hi, I've just bought a DNS323 and it looks a nice bit of kit. Unfotunately one of the reasons I bought it was to serve my many omnifi DMs1 media streamers around the house which are UPnP compatible with the likes of Twonky, Tversity, Simple Centre etc.
Now I can use an NFS server if I load Openfi on all my boxes and am testing on one at the moment.
However to do that I had to upgrade to fw 1.08 and add the nfs app. this however locks the unit randomly and only unplugging from the mains will correct that. Obviously this makes it a little unreliable for my other purpose of backing up my PCs.
If I take the funplug route and add the nfs server that it uses, will I still get these lockups, or can people report that it works fine.?
I am a novice at Linux, but remember the old Dos command days, so I presume it would be doable for me, perhaps with a little help.
Can anyone please advise.?
TIA

I have used the userspace nfs that fonz has bundled with ffp, I haven't had any lockups, but I don't use it that often, nor for a while, I think it is considered stable here though. See http://dns323.kood.org/howto:ffp
installing ffp is easy (just download 2 files, copy them to the root of the volume_1 and reboot and you are done), then set the telnet password, login and issue a few simple commands and your nfs will be running, so yes, I am sure it is doable

Thank you Luusac,
I've looked over how to install ffp and am really impressed with the quality of the instructions. Even a novice like myself should be able to manage it.
I have to get one of my DMS1 with Openfi to recognise the nfs server automatically and then I'll probably go for it.
Now if only it had a standard UPnP server, :-).

Currently getting "permission denied" when trying to access the dlink nfs server. There appears to be no log to determine what the cause is.
Does the ffp version have some sort of log to identify problems.?
I did have it working previously with a different client ip address. Changed the host ip address in the DNS323 and even restarted the nfs server, but still denied.???
TIA

Thank you fonz.
Followed the instructions, but have not yet disabled telnet as the ssh does not seem to work properly with Putty.
In telnet I have issued the command with the following results
/ # sh /ffp/start/nfsd.sh start
Creating default exports file...
/mnt/HD_a2 192.168.2.0/24(rw,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)

Starting /ffp/sbin/rpc.statd
exportfs: could not open /var/lib/nfs/xtab for locking
Starting /ffp/sbin/rpc.nfsd 8

/ #
In SSH I can login and it displays "Enter 'help' for commands", but help does not work. I get no response. Also I have not been able to log out without just closing the window. exit does not work.
Have I missed something. I checked the commands on the display shown here
http://nas-tweaks.net/Image:Fun_plug-telnet-session.png
and see I have missed the echo command at the top. In the web page it mentions pwconv.??
Can I correct, or do I need to start again.? If so is it just a case of deleting the ffp directory, replacing the two files and a restart.?
TIA

Have this from the messages file, still not sure what it cannot find for mount command on the client
$ mount -t nfs 192.168.2.101:/mnt/HD_a2 /storage/disks/nas1
mount: 192.168.2.101:/mnt/HD_a2 failed, reason given by server: Permission denied
On the NAS the messages file is as below.???

you can't use /ffp/start/nfsd.sh witholder firmwares, as they don't have kernel-nfs support. use unfsd.sh as described in http://dns323.kood.org/howto:ffp#nfs_ne … ile_system
PS: for you ssh problem, also read http://dns323.kood.org/howto:ffp#shells

Working a treat now, nfs serve and shell.
Many thanks for your help and patience fonz.

Hey Gasman,
I saw one post from you on the D-Link forum saying that NFS was crashing the DNS-323 after a certain time because of the heat & the disks which never stop spinning, could you confirm please ?
thanks

I reported that the device locked up in the same way as someone else reported, and only removing the power would reset it.
This has happened twice since I upgraded. I have since disabled the dlink nfs server, and will monitor it for a while. It has not locked up a third time, yet.
I could not give you a reason as to why though, just it had only happened since upgrading the firmware to 1.08. If it occurs again I will downgrade to either 1.06 which the unit came with or 1,07.
