So, I decided I wanted to upgrade from D-Link FW 1.06 to their latest beta, 8.05, that I've been hearing so many good things about.
Before installing, I tried uninstalling FFP by deleting files, but it left some due to insufficient permissions. I guess I didn't think too much of it, so I installed the latest beta FW. Then I decided I should just format the drive to solve this little problem.
Well, that got rid of the files alright, but now FFP won't install after dumping the funplug an funplug.tgz files on it. I only have one drive in the NAS right now, and it's in the right-hand side. I tried moving it over to the left-hand side in case that was the problem, but no luck there.
As I recall, I believe I changed the root password after my initial installation of FFP months ago. Is this what's causing FFP to now be unable to install?
If so, and I wrote a new root password to flash memory (http://nas-tweaks.net/CH3SNAS:Tutorials/fun_plug), which I think is what I might have done, what can I do to rectify this?

what files have you copied (what are their names) and where have you copied them to?

So, I may have resolved this, but I'll answer your question first: I had initially installed FFP back when I was running FW 1.06. It has been so long, but I believe I altered the root password on the device because I didn't want FFP's telnet running wide-open and also wanted to turn on FFP's SSH service. I can't tell you which method I used to change the root password, but I think I followed this: http://nas-tweaks.net/CH3SNAS:Tutorials … _password. Everything's been working fine, more or less, since then.
Fast forward to last night, and I decided to upgrade to FW 1.08b5 to fix an SMB issue the DNS-323 has on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), to gain Bonjour, fix the NTP client, and a few other odds and ends.
It was my thought that it would be a good idea to remove/uninstall FFP and reset my DNS-323 to defaults before upgrading to FW 1.08b5. So I tried to remove FFP by just deleting the \ffp folder and funplug script but ran into some permissions issues when deleting the \ffp folder. At this point, I believe FFP's telnet and SSH were already non-functional. So, I flashed to FW 1.08b5, ran a reformat on the disk, then tried to reinstall FFP, but it just wouldn't unpack the FFP tarball upon reboot.
So...I decided to try installing the custom, telnet-enabled FW 1.05 here: http://dns323.kood.org/howto:telnet Doing this did allow telnet access. My next idea was to do another reset to defaults. At this point, I reinstalled FW 1.08b5, did yet another reset to defaults, then tried to install FFP and, lo and behold, it worked!
My guess is that the install of the telnet-enabled FW 1.05 and/or the several reset to defaults, must've caused that root password in NVRAM to be overwritten.
Well, that's my story. I'd love to hear your thoughts on my theory about the root password and also am curious, at this point, whether or not there's really any concern, when upgrading D-Link firmwares, that it'll break FFP functionality. From what I can tell, unless D-Link decided, maliciously, to do so, their typical FW updates are not going to touch FFP functionality.
