Which of the 1.04 builds is this - it shows a release date of 1/10 - does that make it the 104b84?

This, to me, means it's a supported release that's passed QA. In reality....ask Tilly, he seems to get these as they are hatched.

Hi DNS-323 guys

From the filesize is can be the build 1.04b82 od 1.04b84. But because Zen Seeker did a binary compare it should be the b84.

D-Link USA seems deliberately to confuse the customer, because otherwise they would have write the build no und release date in the filename, and give a full complete change log available. There log is like a patchwork log from all 1.04 build versions. So no tranzpareny, therefore for me there change log is unusable.

What release date says the 323 firmware site after an upgrade? Like this with the version 1.04b84

Current Firmware Version :  1.04
Firmware Date :  01/10/2008

Having upgraded from my setup of firmware rev 1.03 running TwonkyMedia and Debian Chroot via FUN_PLUG to firmware rev 1.04, I haven't had a problem of losing any data or needing to reformat my hard drive.  But I don't know if this will be the case if upgrading from any of the earlier 1.04 beta firmware revisions.

Those who tried 1.04 and that had problems with uPNP (especially with the PS3) and Itune server, were they solved?

Itune server does not work for me with my mp3 collection (as I mentionned in another thread, when I point it to a specific directory with just a few mp3s it works, but with the entire collection, not) and the PS3 won't simply connect to the DNS323... (it gives some network error)

Anyhow, I'll give it a shot tonight...

I do agree with you a 100%
However I haven't found (maybe and i'm sure there's one) a good way to backup those things on the dns323, and when it comes to backup, as a personnal opinion, harddisk shouldnt be used when data can't be afford to be lost (by that I mean, burn the stuff on dvd, or whatever).

Anyhow, I bought not so long ago a 1TB mybook thingy to essentially backup stuff, but would have to plug the thing in the usb port of the dns323 or having some soft of software that would do backup through the network.

Any suggestions of yours (or of course anybody else) would be more than welcomed

Actually mig pointed that out in the second post of this thread - and if he hadn't I would have - now - as regards the backup and format - I did not have to format, and I don't think a format should be required if you're already using ext2 - so here's the question ...

- are you going to hope that your experience matches mine, and that I'm right about what I think - are you going to risk a firmware flash without a backup and jeopardize your data ....

or

- are you going to take responsibility for your data and back it up before the flash

By the way - I didn't back mine up - - all the data on mine is already backed up, so I didn't need to.

@jeff777 - I've used several of the 1.04 betas and not had to reformat once.

@mallfouf - I've seen the drive activity - I don't think it's a defrag, generally speaking defrag is not required with ext2 (I don't believe I said that) - I'm hoping it's some sort of integrity scan - fsck - type of thing.

@Spirit - if you can't [i]afford[/] to lose it, that means you need to back it up - place a dollar value on it - $100, $200, $500, $1000 - what will a second DNS-323 and a pair of 500GB drives cost you?

I didn't see it in the change list, but do the drives still spin up one after the other when you have them in RAID 1?  They should be able to spin up both drives at the same time, but instead it does one and then the other which takes quite a bit longer.

You could have one disk as your data disk and one as your duplicate and then copy everything from disk over to the other once a night, using the tutorial below.  Some great ideas from mig, fonz, dkl and others...

I just doubled check and I have 360 available on each drive.
The thing is that we're 2 at home using each drive for specific type of data, and 500 would be quite thight soon enough... Thus me wanting to have a backup solution!
Note that my main computer is an iMac, but have a pc laptop with vista as well as a win2k3 server and another desktop pc based with xp media center.

I was thinking along the same lines as Chumby suggested. 

Copy all the data to each drive, so the drives have identical copies of the data.

Power down and pull the volume_2 drive (the drive on your left, as you look at the power button).

Perform the firmware upgrade with only one drive.

If all goes well, power down and insert other drive... you're done

If there is a problem and you have to reformat  the disk, you have a backup copy of your data.
The data can be be restored from the backup disk to the DNS-323.
    - Local transfer, by loading fonz's fun_plug and attaching the backup disk to the DNS-323 in a USB case
    - Network transfer, by connecting the backup disk to another computer and booting with a Linux LiveCD (Knoppix)
    - Network transfer, by connecting the backup disk to a windows PC using Ext2ifs http://www.fs-driver.org/

You can remove the duplicated data and return you drives to the original configuration 85Gbytes on volume_1
and 125Gbytes on volume_2  - or - setup a backup script (see Chumby's tread) to continue the duplication as
you data changes.

I have this same question with regard to Xbox360 and/or Vista Media Center don't they do UPnP? Can it read from the DSN-323 after the new firmware?

My old DNS323 got replaced because of a faulty LED in the front. The unit i recieved as a replacement was a brand new unopened box, with new colors and design (orange instead of green, quite nice actually). The unit looks the same but I think it's a newer hardware revision (A1)? And it was pre-flashed with 1.02 FW.

My unit was bought here in Sweden so it is an EU unit. My question now is one that have been adressed before, I know, but can I flash the 1.04 FW on the ftp in the first post on my EU unit, because I think that the FW listed there is the US version?

Or are there no US/EU version problems? Thanks for answering!
