Been using the DNS for about 2 weeks now. I have firmware 1.03, using two Samsung 500 GB drives in RAID1 config.

I have email accounts with Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail. I've found SMTP server addresses for both Yahoo and Gmail, but neither work. I've tried using my account info and these SMTP servers in every combination that I can think of. Has anyone gotten the email alerts to work with any of these email account providers? Anyone know of another free email service that does work?

Also, I am clicking "save settings" before hitting the "send test email" button.

I guess if I can't get the email alerts to work, at least the color of the HD LED should let me know when a drive is having problems, correct? Does that actually work? I think I've read several places that it doesn't...

Have you tried using your ISP's SMTP server?

How do I find out what my ISP's SMTP server is? I have SBC DSL, and it's under my roommate's name, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't have an email account setup with them, so I'm not sure if could use it even if I got the address.

If he has sbc dsl he has an email account regardless to whether or not hes ever logged in. Whatever username/pw the modem logs in as can be used as the mail account.

eg urroommate@sbcglobal.net
pw = pw he used to setup the internet.

You could also try smtp.sbcglobal.net (or even mail.sbcglobal.net) as the SMTP server

MOST ISPs that restrict outbound mail to flow thru their servers to combat spam do not need a username/pass. They just relay it thru their mail server if it is comming from one of their own class C addresses in their network.

Bresnan, Centurytel and alot of the other big ISP are doing this. Back when I was in montana, depending on where I was (work, home or parents house) I would need to send thru 3 different outbound mail servers on my laptop.

I found a nifty little util that would attempt to send their all the config'd outbound mail addresses, trying the last successful one 1st then moving on to the next etc.

Myself now, I have setup port 26 in my hosting company to also accept inbound mail, so I just tell clients for accounts off our service to just used port 26 and they dont have to worry about their local ISP.

Now if dlink would not overwite the port directive on their email.conf file at every bootup, the exited port 25 > 26 would stick.....

are there ways to modify the default port settings and ssl configurations so that d-link can send via yahoo/gmail servers?

I too am trying to figure out a way to get email alerts and not be dependant on my ISP's email servers (I don't use them). Is there a away to use Gmail?
