I have this same question with regard to Xbox360 and/or Vista Media Center don't they do UPnP? Can it read from the DSN-323 after the new firmware?

For me the UPnP server is still unusable because I can only see a maximum of 30 items from any list (Artists, Albums, ...)

I connect to the UPnP server from Reciva internet radio (via UPnP) and Kiss 1600. I installed fun_plug and Twonky and it works.

Edit: I'm using the 1.04b84 build (that Zen Seeker noted is binary identical with the dlink.com 1.04 release).

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

Ok, I just thought I'd answer my own question smile, no problem it's just that i usually can't wait until someone answers tongue.

Anyway, I upgraded my Swedish DNS-323 to 1.04 using the firmware found on the german D-link support site. The filename had 3 things that I though were important - DNS323, EU and 1.04 smile. That's all i needed to know, full filename is: NAS202B_DLINKEu_DNS323.1.04b84(1.36.0110.2008).

Upgrade went smoothly, fast and without the dreaded reformatting of the drives. As I just backed up the most important stuff to my desktop because of lack of space, this was a huge relief. Truth be told, I upgraded the old DNS (see post above) to 1.03 from 1.01, and that went well without reformatting too, so I believed it should work this time. Note: I formatted the original RAID1 with EXT2 right away as I read about problems here on this forum.

OT
One perculiar thing though - when i recieved my new unit on RMA, the drives had all data on them still but the unit didn't recognise the RAID setup. So all of a sudden i sat there with two drives (Volume_1 and Volume_2) with identical data on them! But that was actually OK because i wanted it that way! (Observe that this applied to the new device i recieved on RMA, and not this new firmware upgrade. I just thought i'd share my experience with that).
/OT

Well, i haven't tried all the new stuff in 1.04 apart from "clear print queue" because i have always had the disc spin up issue for as long as i have had this device. I really hope it works. I will know during the evening smile.

Well, thats it for now, good luck to all you other adventurers!

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

I did an update. Some observations:

- Like others, it looks like it preserved my data.
- The new firmware screwed up the users that I had created inside the box along with the permissions. I had to redo all of that.
- It was slow for a bit (in terms of accessing it), but it seems to be fine now.

I'll post anything else that I see.

The firmware update didn't screw up any of my users or groups. Did u update directly from 1.03 or from a previous version?

After the update, there was a lot of disk activity and i thought there was some form of defragmentation going on, but i couldn't confirm.

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

The above firmware is now the same one offered on teh US D-Link site. The version isn't noted, other than 1.04, in the change log but I did a binary compare and they are the same. The date is wrong as well as it should be the same as the b84 release.

I have upgraded to every version since 1.03 from this site. Only issue I had was reformating drives the first time I installed a 1.04 version. (I don't use RAID.) I did delete my user account with this last upgrade but that was only becuase I read about issues with a few past firmware versions. I wasn't using them yet so figured it was simple enough to delete.

Not much help but hope someone can use the info.

There has so far never been any difference in the versions. I.e US and EU has been exactly the same.

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

Any news on whether this contains the bittorrent client?

I'm guessing it does if it's the same FW from late last year.

And if it does - I'm after a recomendation ...  go with the built in downloader or use MLDonkey?

Cheers,

Cam

I upgraded from 1.03 to 1.04 today, running Raid 1.  No re-format was necessary, data seems to be OK.

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

I also upgraded the firmware from 1.03 to 1.04 and did not have to reformat. I have two drives set up as RAID 1 and everything seems to work as before the upgrade. The only difference is a new folder with the name ".systemfile" and unknown content. When I try to open that folder I get the message "Access is denied".

This is samba folder I suppose, you can get into by using root account and ssh to dns-323. There are 3 files inside: .aquota.grp, .aquota.user and .smb.tmp.

- Fixed failure to mount an existing HDD when it is pre-formatted as NTFS/FAT32 and is being inserted into the device.

I hope this fixes the HDD formating bug in 1.03.

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

I upgraded from 1.03 and file sharing with linux was very flaky.  I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy and sometimes my pc will lose all connectivity to the 323.  Windows XP was fine with it, but Ubunutu did not like it.

I downgraded back to 1.03 and everything is good again.  Has anyone else seen this?

It isn't a defrag.  In general, the Linux ext2 filesystem doesn't need defragment (I don't think there is a current defrag program available even).

I watched mine after upgrading, and it appears to be mt-daapd indexing the disk (at least all the mp3s it can find).

For what it is worth, this is identical to 1.04b84 that was released on the German site a while ago.

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

So far 1.04 works well.

The kernel seems to giving me slightly more throughput on my two 250's in raid1.
Solid 17.7MB/s on writes and 14MB/s on reads over a 8GB file.

However it didn't flash correctly the first time.
Had to recover it using the serial console.

I'm curious, could you tell us how you recovered the DNS-323 from a bad flash?

I won't enter into any discussions on whether or not ext2 file systems need defragging, I will, however, be willing to create a badly fragmented disk with an ext2 file system and ship same to anyone willing to foot the bill - for no other reason than to show that fragmentation can occur with ext2 file systems, just as it does with any random access read/write storage.

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

Good read about fragmentation.

http://cbbrowne.com/info/defrag.html

Short story ext2fs can indeed be fragmented. However it will not suffer from this in the same way as FAT will do.
Basicly it is most probably not worth the effort to defragment your ext2fs storage.

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

I was looking for a complete 1.04 changelog, but i can΄t find it. I think i saw it somewere but... I was especially looking for any updates that adresses the never-spindown-disc-when-in-raid issue. Any news about this exept from the print spooler flush thing?

Re: DNS323 Firmware Rev 1.04 now on ftp.dlink.com

My initial reaction was - ?? there's a never-spindown-disc-when-in-raid issue ?? - because I don't recall hearing about it and it's not in the wiki.

I popped a spare pair of 250 GB disks in, formatted RAID1, rebooted and waited - sure enough in 5 minutes, the disks had spundown - so - is there a "never-spindown-disc-when-in-raid issue?  What are the details?
