Hi,
Has anyone added a custom serial port to a DNS-323 Rev-B1? The main reason I ask, is that on my board, the 4 pin CON4 header is directly behind the HDD1 LED and not in the middle of the board as it is in the serial howto and the other images on the site. I just want to make sure that it is in the same orientation (i.e. right to left: 3.3V / TX / RX / GND).

Good point. So I tried that, and the header is the same way round as on the older board. Other than having a different layout, the only other difference I can see is that the processor is a 88F5182-A2 instead of the 88F5181-B1.
I'm guessing that that shouldn't make any difference to installing a serial port / native debian?
Anyway, I've attached a shot of the board for reference.

I'm trying to get a hold of this serial port. I own a DNS-323.
Here in the board you say that the orientation is, left to right:
° ° ° °
3.3V Tx Rx GND
But on the wiki Rx and Tx are swapped. The wiki page is somewhat abiguous: a version, a corrected version + the old version struck off, then someone says that "this correction is wrong", leaving all the previous version there. I do not want to burn my DNS, and I do not know how to determine it by myself "with my VOM".
So, which is the correct one? Do I have to trust the forum OR the wiki?

If you connect rx and tx incorrectly for short period of time, very most likely nothing bad happens. I have done this dozen times. Just make sure you have ground and vcc correctly connected.
Information varies mostly because its cross connection. And you must not confuse board connector to cable connector.

Yup, I am very sure of this. So, basically, if I do some kind of brief Rx/Tx swapping before doing the real connection I should do fine.
Then I'll take the color corrispondances from the bottom of the Serial page, and then make adjustments accordingly.

is the pin out of the board, and I have to connect the Rx from my cable to Tx of the board, and Tx from the cable to Rx of the board?

That's generally how it works - but as has been discussed earlier in the thread - correcting those two lines incorrectly does not, as a general rule, cause long term damage - it just doesn't communicate.

Hi,
I'm quite new at the DNS-323 modifications and found the info about adding a serial port a little confusing. I have a HW rev B1 unit, and according to some howtos, the spot where I would have to solder the wires seems to already have a molex connector (circled on the picture) .
Does this mean I can simply use the USB cable described in the "Using a USB cable" at the bottom of this page http://dns323.kood.org/hardware:serial ?
