ftp not working as i had hoped

hi all,

just recently tried doing an alternative backup option via the 323 ftp server.

i have only one username defined on the 323... and within the ftp server optoins, i have that user as R+W at root.

when i tried doing a backup from my 2k3 via FlashFXP ... with the same username & pw as defined within the 323. when trying to ftp, i get

[R] MKD /Volume_1/_BACKUP/2008-06-02/Keiro MailServer 6.4.0
[R] 550 Can't create directory: No such file or directory
[R] CWD /Volume_1/_BACKUP/2008-06-02/Keiro MailServer 6.4.0
[R] 550 Can't change directory to /HD_a2/_BACKUP/2008-06-02/Keiro MailServer 6.4.0: No such file or directory
Transfer queue completed

it seems that when in FTP, it looks for a folder.. but does not create one.. is it possible its a 323 thing or an FTP program thing. i have never had issues with FlashFXP in the past

cheers

Re: ftp not working as i had hoped

Couple of quick questions to help isolate the problem:

How did the directories '_BACKUP' and '2008-06-02' get created?

Did you create them, and if so, how did you create them or did FlashFXP create them.

Are there any other directories under '2008-06-02' that have been created by FlashFXP?

The first observation I have is that the directory 'Keiro MailServer 6.4.0" has spaces in it.

Are there any other directories created by FlashFXP which have spaces in them?

Re: ftp not working as i had hoped

hi mig

those were created manually via standard windows share (//dns323)

the date folder i tried to get flash fxp to create them but didnt work, then created that folder manually again same method above

flashfxp cant create the folders no matter what i have tried (and yes, majority of folder names / file names) do have spaces

cheers

Re: ftp not working as i had hoped

O.K. with that new information I don't think the spaces in the name are the culprit.
It could be a permissions issue, or possibly a problem with the 'case' of the directory
names '_BACKUP'

WinXP is not case sensitive backup == BACKUP, but linux is case sensitive.

It's very unlikely you will get to the root cause of this problem unless you
have telnet access to your DNS-323.

Can you telnet into this DNS-323 and look at the directories you created

# ls -la /Volume_1/_BACKUP/2008-06-02/

and post the result.

'standard windows share' connects to the DNS-323 via samba and is
authenticated and permission are granted by valid samba users

flashxp connects to the DNS-323 via the ftp user (which is probably not
a valid samba user)

So, it's understandable that these two programs, connecting as different users,
could have different permissions on a directory.
