Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Is there a proper way to power down the unit besides using the Shutdown function in the admin interface? If the power button was held down until the unit powers down, is that safe to do? ie not sure if it's bad for the unit and data to power down this way.

The fonz funplug provides a dns323-poweroff binary that shutdown the unit (it doesn't work for me, but if you are a dns323 user it surely works, it was cofnirmed in another topic).
It doesn't perform any cleanup(kill app process)/unmounting(unmounting flash device, flush the sata cache, unount sata drives)/etc... operation, so, if you do all that stuff and then call the dns323-poweroff binary this should be considered a clean shutdown.
Regarding the power button shutdown, i think that the shutdown is invoked by the chkbutton process, but i don't have a clue about how this shutdown is performed. I'm sure that someone here will be more helpful than me about that one.

Jules, that was my question exactly. I am not running anything except for stock firmware. I am wondering if I have to log in to the admin GUI to shutdown every time or if pressing the power button is sufficient.
Hey, I am running the same dual WD 500 Gig HDD's.

Powering it down using the front panel button is safe - in fact it is the only method listed in the manual.
