Can't log in after 1.04 FW upgrade
I can't log in to my DNS-323 after FW 1.04 upgrade.
Upgrade went fine, drive is accessible, but when I try to log in to it to configure, I get wrong password error.
I've tried "admin" and my previous password (and had just used it to log in to do the upgrade, so I know it was working) and also tried "admin" and no password, neither works.
Any ideas? Help!

I tried logging in from another computer, no dice there, either.
I've looked for a password reset option in the docs, and don't see that...c'mon you genius types! :-)

OK...finally found the reset on the back (DUH! Must not have gotten enough sleep last night). Hit it for about 15 seconds and got it w/default admin and no password. Data on both drives (RAID1 on two 500GB) appears to be fine.

You must be viewing the old manual! The new 1.2 manual is up on support.dlink.com which should show the reset button properly this time.
Glad your unit is still working and data intact.

DNS-323 Talker are you saying there is no security on the DNS-323? If you lost your password and then just reset it to default and all of your data was there, then there is no security. Passwords are then useless.

Are you familiar with the concept of physical security - I don't really care what server you're running, but if I can physically get my hands on it, I'll find a way to get to the data on it - starting by pulling the disks and connecting them to one of my own servers.
This is a consumer grade NAS, designed for use in a home environment, if you were looking for enterprise level security then you are looking in the wrong place.

If you have a Windows NT, Windows Server or XP machine with NTFS and you remove a disk and somehow get it to boot up on another machine, you still do not have access to the data without knowing the login password. I am assuming you are using a password. You cannot just hit a default switch and reset the password to nothing and then access the data without knowing the original password.
If that is the way the DNS-323 works, it is not acceptable for SMB and really not for home use either. Forgetting the password and then returning it to default should give you access to the box, but never the data.
If this is the way the box works I will have to switch to using TrueCrypt as I want my data secure.

Incorrect. You can attach an Windows NT, Windows Server or XP drive to other MS systems and access all files without a password if you want. It's not anymore secure then DNS-323 unless you do encryption at the data level.

Whilst marmot74 is for the most part correct (there are some file system incompatabilities if one is using a "down level" MS OS, the later OSs can generally read the filesystems of the earlier OSs), I'd like to point out that the same also holds true for unix, linux and most other operating systems.
If the files have not been encrypted, they are generally accessible, simply by mounting the media on a system running an appropriate OS for example, you can mount an NTFS drive on a linux system and read it, or mount an ext2 drive on Windows and read it through ext2ifs.
I'll also take the liberty of repeating myself ...

I am having a password problem as well. I have a backup of my config file, is there anyway to decrypt the password in the file? If not, are you saying that I can just hit the reset button and not lose my data? That sounds to good to be true.
