i tried editing the network security: LAN manager authentication level to send lm & ntlm - use ntlmv2 blah blah...but still the prob exist
i tried using easy search utility but tat app cant even detect my dns-323(i allow the app under firewall) but i can access the dns-323 thru webpage

Hi!
I've got the same problem but with Vista/XP 32bit.
I don't know how many hours I spent on internet finding a solution but, except the workaround you (and I) use, I couldn't find anything else.
I tried everything: fixed IP, DHCP, DHCP with reservation (I use a D-Link 655 and all my PC/Xbox 360 are connected there).
Nothing worked so far.
Everytime I turn off the DNS-323, when I turn it on again, I can't access to the Volume but I CAN access to its web-page and I have to do the Network-Access Trick to make it works again.
I also changed the DNS' HD (a Maxtor Sata 300) with a WD 500Gb Sata II but same story.
I'm forced to leave it On all day even if I use it only the evening, when I come back home...
Oh, by the way, the firmware is 1.04 and the Hardware is A1.
Do you know if it's only a windows-related problem ? I mean, the DNS-323 works OK under Linux or Mac OSX ?
Thanks for anyone who can help me/us and sorry for my english, I'm from Italy.

Can you connect to your DNS323 using its IP address?
Can you configure your network so that it always gets a static IP address?
If you can, then you could edit the file c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and add an entry for the name of your DNS323.

How does the DNS323 advertise itself on a network?
Before I got my network Domain Name Service server set up correctly the DNS323 was the only machine that I could connect to by name. I assumed that the built in Samba server normally responds to some Windows broadcast queries?
I noticed (like the posts above) that the lookup by name sometimes failed, so I had to use the IP address to connect, or include a hosts file entry. Does anyone know what magic is going on?

Hi!
In my case the DNS-323 is connected to the Dlink DIR-655 Router and, yes, it has a static IP like every pc connected to the router (even my xbox 360).
Editing the file you said, I should add a line like this:
192.168.0.100 DNS-323 (this is just a label or do I have to insert the Exact name of my 323 ??)
Thanks for your help!

You have set a name for your DNS323 in the Admin web page > Setup Section > Device > Name
You need to enter that name on a line like
192.168.0.100 yourname
Remember, only do this if you have set a static IP for your DNS323 AND you don't want to set up proper DNS on your network. (In my case a firmware upgrade for my ADSL router included a better DHCP and DNS server setup.)
If you change the name or IP number of the DNS323, don't forget to update the hosts file.
Good luck!

Hi sjmac,
thanks a lot for your help! I did a quick try after the trick you told me and... seems working !!
I'll keep the DNS-323 off till evening and I'll try again and, if it's still working, YOU'RE GREAT! (even if it's not you're great anyway :-D )
I'll let you know this evening...
Bye!
