6 hours to transfer 16.5GB normal?

Hi, this is what i've got:

NAS: DNS-323
Firmware: 1.03
Drives: Western Digital 500GB SATA 3.0 (WD5000AAKS) x2
Config: RAID1
OS: Ubuntu 7.10
Router: Linksys Gateway WCG200
Connection Method: Places -> Network -> Windows Network -> MyNetworkName -> DNS323 -> Volume_1

I can connect fine and both read and write files, but the time it takes to do anything is sooo slow.  I'm copying about 16.5GB of mp3s from the NAS to my desktop and it's estimating 6 hours.  is this normal?  i've read people are getting transfer speeds in between 6-12MB/s in RAID1, but at this rate i'm getting <1MB/s.  writing speeds are equally slow.  what gives?

i'm a linux noob.  is there something i can do to increase speeds, or can i check to see if i did something wrong?

also, i've tried to connect to it via SMB4K and the speeds are just as slow.

Perhaps your RAID array is resyncing? You should be getting speeds >10GB/hour.

Re: 6 hours to transfer 16.5GB normal?

Using BackUp Exec to backup a little less than 14GB takes me around 45 minutes over a gigabit network, I'd estimate that as 90 minutes if I was using 100 mbps, however, that would be 14 x 1GB files - transferring a large quantity of small files is going to take longer, and, using 4MB as the average size of an MP3, 16.5 GB of MP3s would translate into approximately 4000 files - so that is going to take quite a while to transfer - six hours is not inconceivable.

You might also want to take a look around the forum, I've seen a couple of posts relating to slow or low performance when used with Ubuntu.

how can i check how frequently the drives are resyncing?  is this something that's standard or something i can easily modify?

i found another thread and will try FTPing and mounting with cifs to see if that clears the issue:

As far as I am aware the only time the DNS-323 resyncs the drives in a RAID array would be after one has failed and been replaced.
