Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Hello,
As of today, my dns-323 is configured as follow, with 2x500Gb HD:
(RAID1) Total Volume_1 space = 196576 MBytes, Used space = 118281 MBytes, Free space = 78294 MBytes
(JBOD) Total Volume_2 space = 589241 MBytes, Used space = 41430 MBytes, Free space = 547810 MBytes
So it is roughly 150 Gb of data for the moment. I also have a 250G hd available as temp space, just in case.
I would like to switch to non-RAID and just rsync every night volume1 to volume2 (data on vol2 doesn't need backup)
Would the following work 100%:
- create a tar for volume_1 (tar cvf)
- create a tar for volume_2 (tar cvf)
- transfer both tar files (FTP or SMB share) to external disk
- reformat everything (2 500Gb disks)
- install fun-plug
- restore first tar on Volume1
- restore second tar on Volume1
- setup rsync as describded in other topic
Would all rights be kept ? Any comments, ideas (rsync ?)
Thanks.

looks fine. tar preserves file permissions, symbolic links, device files, pipes, etc... It's pretty safe and reliable, overall. Actually, tar is the 'tape archiver' and made specifically for backup purposes.

Thanks for the confirmation fonz.
And yes, I'm a tar addict. When it comes to backup, I love dar from http://dar.linux.free.fr/ Could someone compile it ? Otherwise, rsync will be my solution.

So the process went fine. I just had an issue with reformating the drives. I finally took them away from the dns (by the way, X Craft external hd enclosure from cooler master is a real killer... 4 secs to swap drives in/out), removed all partitions and then inserted/formatted them one by one into the DNS.
Another small issue occured: first disk was shared through volume_2 and second disk was shared through volume_1. So it took me some time to understand that fun_plug should be sent to volume_2 .....
rsync is currently syncing the data. takes some time the first time.
Thanks everyone !
