Can't delete DNS-323 mapped network drive from XP

Hi there,

I mapped the DNS-323 from the software that came with it. Now, the DNS-323 is in the office as a backup server and I can't pull it out anymore.

My problem is that I installed the DNS-323 on XP Pro machine first to test it and mapped a Network drive using the DLINK software. Now that the DNS-323 is not here anymore on my XP Pro I can't "disconnect" the network anymore. Its' looking for the device.

Anyone encountered same scenario?

Thanks in advance for the tips!

Re: Can't delete DNS-323 mapped network drive from XP

In Windows XP, click Start > Help and Support
Type "mapped drive" in to the Search box
Click the green arrow.

Option 2: "Diconnect from a mapped drive" looks like what you need:

To disconnect from a mapped network drive
Open My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Disconnect Network Drive.
Click the drive from which you want to disconnect, and then click OK.
Note

To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.

It does not show up. It's possible maybe as this was installed by DLinks software.

I tried to right click on it and hit disconnect but it says "the network connection could not be found"

:-/

Does the command
net use X: \\yourServer\yourShare /DELETE
help?

(Replace X with the mapped drive letter that you have, and \\yourServer\yourShare with the path that you mapped originally)

Type the command in to a command prompt.

What do DLink support say?

Hi Hobie1,

In XP, I found that if a network drive is mounted on the same letter by both the logged on user and system, then when the user tries to disconnect it, the error message you observed is reported.  It seems that although the network drive is disconnected, the drive letter is not released because of system mount.   Thus any subsequent attempts to disconnect reports "network connection could not be found".

To release the system mount, run an at script in which you do net use x: /delete where x is the drive letter that you want to disconnect.

Hope this helps.

Jaya

Re: Can't delete DNS-323 mapped network drive from XP

It worked! I opened a dos window. Typed it and it was still there in Explorer.

I had to restart for the J drive to disappear.

Thanks so much for the tip!
