Re: Reserved Symbol Characters

Is your question?

What characters are not allowed in the filename?

And further what characters was removed?

I think that the only character not supported in a filename is "/".

Re: Reserved Symbol Characters

Plasmaray, I don't know if it is what you are talking about, but I just updated from firmware 1.03 to 1.04 and all the extended characters ( é, è, ç, à,...) just disappeared. All my file structure got corrupted. However, I can put them back manually. I can write files with names that contain extended characters without any problem.

Re: Reserved Symbol Characters

There is a FAQ on the D-Link website:

"Q: How do I get Unicode support on the DNS-323?
A: If you are using firmware 1.04, by default the DNS-323 will support Unicode which is an industry standard allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in most of the world’s writing formats. However, if you were using an earlier version of firmware (1.03 or earlier) and have just upgraded to 1.04, Unicode will not be supported until you have reformatted the hard drives in your DNS-323. If you wish to store non-English character files but do not want to reformat your hard drives, you will need to change the Language setting of the device to ensure compatibility with those files."

I reformatted my drives after upgrading to 1.04. In my opinion, getting Unicode support is worth the time lost for backing up and restoring all files on the DNS-323. After upgrading the firmware to version 1.04 and formatting the drive, Unicode support is automatically enabled. When you use the Easy Search Utility afterwards and click on "Language" you get the message "Unicode language support is already enabled on this device". The options Japanese, Western European, etc. are no longer listed, probably because they are not needed anymore.

Re: Reserved Symbol Characters

I agree. Definitely reformat the drives after upgrading to 1.04; otherwise Unicode support does not work properly.

Re: Reserved Symbol Characters

As previosly discussed on this forum that FAQ is bs. Basicly what you need to do is either fun_plug and run some script to rename the files. Or offload the files and then upgrade to 1.04 and then put them back.

The format does nothing magicly.

Re: Reserved Symbol Characters

The difference in 1.03 and 1.04 is that Samba now supports UTF8 and is the default setup. I.e nothing todo with what is stored on the disk. You can make samba use the old charset if you use fun_plug.
