Should Print Server feature work w/o HD installed inside the DNS-323?

I know, it’s a bit of a silly question, but here is why I’m asking.
One of the main reasons I purchased DNS-323 is it’s built in print server function. In the past couple of weeks I’ve tried to put my multifunction Brother MFC-7220 on my wireless network via Linksys wireless Print server w/o success. I tried numerous things till I turned blue just to find out (according to Linksys tech support) that this print server is not compatible with my printer.
Then I came across DNS-323. Bought it, and decided to test it out before actually investing in SATA HD (trying to avoid restocking fees in case the unit does not support my printer). When I connected it to my network and my printer – the router found it right away, and assigned to it an IP address. Under status/device/printer info – it states “manufacturer:none; product:none”.
So, my question is – is this an indication that my printer is not compatible with DNS-323, or should it work after I connect the HD?

Thanks
David

First - you need to recognise that some printers, especially multi-function ones, just will not work with print servers - expect at best to lose all but the print functions, although you may have better success with specially designed multi-function USB devices such as the NetGear PS121 version 2, which as far as I can tell is not a print server, but some sort of networkable USB port.

To deal with your specific question - my DNS-323 recognizes and displays in the status screen, my Samsung laser printer, with or without disks installed - I don't expect it to print since there is nowhere for it to spool the print job to, but at least it is recognized.
