Hello everyone,
Great website. I wonder if anyone can shed some light on my DNS-323 problem. I have had the unit for around 45-60 days. The drive has been working fine. I have 2 750gig seagate drives in it. I am running the firmware 1.03. They were running in RAID1. Over the last few days I have noticed that the indicator light on the right has been flashed blue which indicates activity. I did a few tests and made sure that nbody was accessing the drive. I got the not so bright idea of deciding to shut down the unit. I powered the unit up again, and of course the drive light stopped flashing after about 2 minutes. I decided to swap the drives out. I tried to use the "good" one alone, no volume was present in the status screen or using the easy setup util. I tried a few different combos, bad drive on left, good drive on right, it made no difference. The volume is not accessible anymore! I hope I didn't make the problem worse! Please advise. Also, I decided to go to the dlink website for answers. I learned that if a RAID1 drive fails, I need to put a "drive" with no parition so it can be copied over to create the mirror. This seems quite silly! I told a friend about this, who wondered what format the drives are currently in. I believe they are ext2 or ex3, he suggested putting the good drive in a linux box to see if i can get my files. I thought this was a great idea but unfortunately I do not have any sata controllers in my PCs. He suggested buying a cheap sata pci controller to check out the drives. He also suggested calling dlink for assitance.
Edit: Called Dlink, they are stumped. Two solutions offered was an exchange or formatting one of the drives. Dlink looked into the issue further, asked if I could try another PC and if I used any firewall software. I have spare computers, same result. no volumes detected. Also the last tech suggested we upgrade the firmware to 1.04 and that way the drives would be seen. If you go into the status window, the drives are not detected. I decided to see if I could read either drive on a PC with a sata controller, again no go. I tried the ext2if driver, tried a few different linux livecds, no go. My next suggestion is going to a store to get sata to try and really determine if the unit has become defective.
