Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

DNS-323 w/ WD10EACS won't "sleep"/spindown

Hi all-

I did a search 1st, and nothing relevant showed up, so here I go.

I have 2 WD10EACS drives in a v1.04 DNS-323. I love the thing. I previously owned a NAS200, used it for about 2 hours, then returned it.

anyway, back on topic, I can't get the WD10EACS drives to sleep.
yes, I have sleep set in the config to 5 mins, but the drives never power down, even w/ the network cable unplugged.
my trust kill-a-watt shows the unit at 15-17w, 23w when syncing the mirrors.

I have the 1st jumper set on the drive (1-2). Someone mentioned I may need 3-4 jumpered, but then the DNS-323 doesn't see the disk.

any ideas?

thanks all!!!

Re: DNS-323 w/ WD10EACS won't "sleep"/spindown

Are you using any custom software such as fun_plug on your DNS-323?
Are you using, or have you used, the DNS-323 as a print server? If so, have you tried clearing the print queue as suggested in the Known Issues wiki page?

no custom software (yet), but plan to.

Yes, it is being used as a print server for my HP photosmart. I have no print jobs queued up, and hit the "clear print queue" button just for fun. I'll see if it sleeps once this raid rebuild is complete.

Re: DNS-323 w/ WD10EACS won't "sleep"/spindown

My DNS-323 consistently has problems sleeping when used as a print server, even after clearing the print queue as suggested in the Wiki page.

My guess is that one way or another the DNS is doing some periodic printer/print job discovery that (unnecessarily?) accesses the hard disk.

Some has suggested that if the printer is mapped on the client PC as a local printer with an IP port (instead of as network printer), the DNS-323 sleeps properly. You can see if that helps.

Re: DNS-323 w/ WD10EACS won't "sleep"/spindown

thanks guys- I *think* I've now got the drives to sleep, by disconnecting the printer and erased all mapped printers to it. I'll look at using IP printting at a later date.

it uses 9w at idle. (18 when running, 28 when crunching)

further testing reveals the unit takes 9w untill you map the printer, then it jumps to 15w. I display the contents of a drive, it sounds like a drive spins up, then the unit takes 18-20w.

wired stuff.

Re: DNS-323 w/ WD10EACS won't "sleep"/spindown

I had the "no spindown" issue with my DNS-323 if any client PCs connecting to router were running.   The printer created at local port does help to resolve my problem.  However, the sequence seems critical for me.  I have to follow the steps below
1. create .lpd directory under \mnt\HD_a2
2. set up network printer as manual suggested
3. add local printer with local part named \\<ip>\lp
4. delete the network printer
My brother MFC-4800 is now working without significant delay, and hard drives sleep well.   Hope this works for you too.
