DNS323 Telnet Stopped working after adding drive #2

Hi Everyone.

I love my new DNS323.

It has firmware version 1.04, and was working perfectly with one Western Digital  1TB SATA II Green Power drive.  It has been streaming videos, music and photos to my Beyonwiz high-def set top box, and the whole family thinks it's fantastic.

I installed Telnet as per the instructions in the Wiki, and it was working fine.

Then I added a second HDD - same specs and brand as the first.

The unit still works fine, but Telnet has stopped working - I try to telnet, but there's no reply.

All the telnet bits and pieces are still on Volume_1 where I first installed them, but I don't have Telnet.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Should I try moving the stuff to Volume_2 instead?

Regards

Neil

P.S. Isn't it amazing how fast you can fill up a 1TB drive? smile

Try swapping the drives from left to right

Re: DNS323 Telnet Stopped working after adding drive #2

Thanks for the reply.

Is Volume_1 supposed to be in the Left or Right bay of the unit?

It's in the Left bay in mine.

Would you please explain your rationale behind swapping the drives?  I'd like to try and understand what's going on.

Would installing the Telnet stuff on Volume_2 achieve the same goal?

Re: DNS323 Telnet Stopped working after adding drive #2

Had you started with the drive in the right bay, you would not have experienced this problem - linux numbers the drives in the sequence it finds them and the DNS-323 looks at the right bay first.  It expects to find fun_plug in a particular partition on the first hard drive (/mnt/HD_a2), which, on your system is now the second hard drive, and the partition has most likely been renumbered to /mnt/HD_b2.

Theoretically installing fun_plug on Volume_2 should achieve the same goal

Re: DNS323 Telnet Stopped working after adding drive #2

I swapped the drives, and Telnet started working perfectly.  Thanks for this.

Only problem is that \\Volume_1 is now called \\Volume_2 and vice versa.

Is there an easy way to get into the box and change these share names around?

It takes me over a day to import all my media into my library management system, and it's all pointing to the original Volumes.

Re: DNS323 Telnet Stopped working after adding drive #2

I had the same problem and if I remember, my fix was to start with the DNS with only one hdd, in the correct position. Then add the second one.

I.E. initially I had the first HDD1 in the second slot. When I added HDD2 it did go in the first slot. To fix the issue, I took out both disks and put HDD1 in slot 1. Start DNS323; shutdown; add HDD2 to slot2; restart.

I believe that during my attempts to fix the issue (I really wanted HDD1 on the first position) while swapping disks I renamed the link on windows (right click, rename) but it was not what I wanted and I had to reverse it back.

Re: DNS323 Telnet Stopped working after adding drive #2

That solved the problem perfectly, thanks!

I booted the DNS with my first drive in the right hand bay, and the left one empty.

It came up as Volume_1

Then a powered off, added second drive to the left hand bay, and rebooted.

Voilla!  It came up as Volume_2, and now Telnet works fine.

Thanks everyone for your assistance.
