Has anyone had any luck using SlimServer to serve music from the NAS, instead of Firefly? I was having some trouble with Firefly, and found people online raving about SlimServer, so I got it installed and running under a chrooted debian. I hadn't yet figured out how to configure it (or even see it from iTunes) before I got Firefly working again and dropped it.
But maybe I shouldn't drop it. Has anyone done this? Is it worth doing? I'm not sure what its advantages are.

Hi,
I run ushare on it.
It runs on debian etch and needed an actual version of libupnp.
Be aware to edit the configure scripts to compile, because the default installation uses /usr/local path.
Under debian it has to be just /usr e.g. /usr/bin /usr/lib etc.
(Explained here http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint … fy.en.html)
ushare sources are here:
http://ushare.geexbox.org/
(Configure shares and preferences on chrooted debian /etc/ushare.conf and starting it with ushare -D -f /etc/ushare.conf)
Twonkymedia is commercial and a 30 days trial is available
http://www.twonkymedia.de/Download/Twon … index.html
(Start it with the fully path eg /mnt/HD_a2/twonky/twonkymediaserver
Fully configurable on the web interface)
With ushare, I experienced a buggy fastforward in all video playback.
I tested it against twonkymedia successfully.
So it was not a client bug (PowerDVD).
(Except MPEG2 videos, where PowerDVD comes the a new error with twonky).
IMHO Ushare runs only under chroot debian and Twonky runs also w/o chrooted.
Have fun :-)

Followup:
I was able to get SlimServer running, and can guide anyone who wants help. However, it's not worth it. The streaming works, but the web interface -- which is central to the whole thing -- works terribly while it is streaming, presumably because it's transcoding songs on the fly. Too much work for the poor little box, I guess.

Oh, I misunderstood you.
Didn't thought, that Slim Server is an real application.
Perhaps I gave you some hints for another tests :-)

dcrosby - Can you post or email me some tips on getting Slimserver running on the DNS-323? As of the current version (6.5.1), Slimserver has native support in the player (Squeezebox unit) for several formats, including FLAC which I use. So the DNS-323's processor shouldn't be a problem. I had Slimserver 6.2 running fine on a Buffalo Linkstation with slower processor. But what has been difficult since Slimserver v6.3 is configuring mysql, I flashed my linkstation to a debian firmware but aptget would run for the slimserver package but not set mysql up correctly.

Hmm, I didn't have any trouble with mysql, that I recall. I probably should have posted something when it was all fresh in my mind. You did apt-get install slimserver and it didn't install the necessary packages?

Carlos, I hope you're still around this forum. Did you get it running? I did a # apt-get install slimserver and i think the install went ok. I don't own a squeezebox yet (depends on a succesful installation), how can i check everything works?

I tried to install Slimserver with # apt-get install slimserver. After the installation process it says that slimserver has started. Also after manual starting with:
root@CH3SNAS:/# /etc/init.d/slimserver start
Starting Slim Devices audio server: slimserver.
root@CH3SNAS:/#
It seems to be started, when i do a 'ps' i get the following lines:

But when i go to the webinterface of the slimserver (192.168.2.10:9000) I get the standard message that there is no page to display.
Any help to get it working? And how do i make the server to start automatically from the funplug?

As I wrote in the above post I have the slimserver running on the CH3SNAS (chroot debian etch), but i cannot reach the config page at http://ipnas:9000. When i do a # netstat -tuan i see that the server is listening at 127.0.0.1:9000.
This should be fine when you want to access the configuration page of the server from the same pc as where it is installed, but if you like me want to access it from another pc in the network it does'nt work.
Any ideas about how to solve this?
