Hi all,
I am thinking of upgrading to firmware 1.04 but with all the reports on it causing the RAID1 drive to have problems is scaring me. So, my question is, how many people actually have problems and how many is having it working fine?
Please post your results :
RAID0/RAID1/JBOD/independant
problem or fine
Did you had to reformat the drives to get it working again?
Thanks.

RAID1 - no problems - the drives were formatted after the firmware upgrade.
And although you didn't ask for the drive info, I'll include it since I believe the problem may be drive related - Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 - 250 GB

Why did you format? Is it giving problems?
My main concern is formating because I do not have enough space to backup my data somewhere else.

I formatted because I was switching from individual disks to RAID1 - no it was not giving problems - and as far as I'm concerned, an upgrade to 1.04 does not require a reformat of the disks, unless you're upgrading from <1.02 and you're currently using ext3.
BUT - when it comes to backup think about this ....
Place a dollar value on the data - forget about upgrading to 1.04 - that can wait until you're good & ready, suppose a virus came along and corrupted your data, suppose a power outage occured and trashed the disks. How much time will it take to replace the data? How much money will it cost or place a value on your time - bottom line how much are you risking by not having a backup - $100? $200? $300? - last drive I bought was 500GB - cost me $99+tax - disk space is cheap, but, it's your data, it's your time, it's your money.

Reformatting is needed for certain new features in 1.04. For example, Unicode file name support, which is important for folks having international characters in their file names.

Not requiring unicode support, I would not be in a position have personal experience with it - I will say that that is the official D-Link position, however I do believe that there is anecdotal evidence in this forum that suggests otherwise.

I do occasionally need the support, and my anecdotal evidence suggests that reformat is needed. Thanks.

Unicode support has nothing todo with the filesystem! I.E Formatting is not needed. However what might be needed is to either rename your files through shell scripts or copy the data elsewhere empty your dns. Upgrade to 1.04 and then copy it back.
Everything has todo with the Samba upgrade from 2.xx -> 3.xx. And the new unicode support.
It can be solved with a script via a fun_plug telnet session....

That was exactly my thought too, and trust me, I tried without formating first. However, it didn't work for me that way. Any files (I had some Chinese as well as Japanese files) copied onto the DNS-323 after the firmware upgrade still had funky characters. Only after a reformat did the DNS-323 start to store the Unicode file names correctly.
Now of course your mileage may vary. Also, keep in mind that by formating we are simply talking about the "format" process of the DNS-323. Nobody knows whether it is just a standard file formating process; it could well be the case that Unicode support had nothing to do with the file system, but "formating" on a DNS-323 involves certain initialization steps that are necessary to make Unicode work 100%.
BTW, here's an excerpt from the D-link Sweden site, which specifically mentions the formatting requirement. I'd be surprised that it was just a generic warning as it applied perfectly to my situation.
1.04
**************
The v1.04 firmware by default supports Unicode which is an industry standard allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. However, if you upgrade your DNS-323 firmware from an older firmware (v1.03 or earlier), the Unicode will not be supported until you re-format your Hard Drives on the DNS-323.
In the case you want to store non-English character files, but you do not want to re-format your Hard Drives on the DNS-323, then you will need to change the Language setting from the Easy Search Utility to ensure full compatibility with those files.

Did you try the Easy Search Utility? Even in 1.03 you needed to use it to get correct locale setup. It modifies your Samba config.

hmm...seems like formating is unavoidable....now to look for temporary storage to backup those files...

Easy Search Utility had the restriction of being able to select only one language, if I recall correctly. The Unicode support in 1.04, however, allows all languages, which is far more flexible than that. In fact, after "reformating" the hard disk with 1.04, if you try changing the language through Easy Search Utility again, it will tell you it's not necessary as Unicode is already enabled on this device.

Hmm,
So there where no option to switch to Unicode before reformating? As you can tell I have not done this yet. ;-)
Seems like the format command is fudging with the smb.conf file.
Perhaps you could upload your smb.conf after the format and we could compare with a smb.conf after upgrade but before any format?

Just format the darn thing....

No problems after upgrade to 1.04. Was running Raid 1 and no format required. (Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400 GB)
Now I'm running individual with 1 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400 GB and 1 WF Caviar GP WD7500AACS 750GB.
(I'm also running a variety of USB memory sticks in the thing.)

I have 2 x 1T Seagate in RAID 1 in my DNS-323.
A few days after upgrading to 1.04 the device starting emailing me that the left disk has failed + the left disk indicator turned pink.
To see if the drive was actually dead I pulled out the working drive (right one) and booted the box. It booted perfectly with the left hard disk indicator lit in blue. However this drive was out of sync with the right one. Left hard disk had less content then the right.
So a few more eject and inserts of both drives, they both now show as activate and I left the unit on as the drives were out of sync. Couple of hours later, the online configuration UI now shows both drives as "synced". Earlier it showed me "degraded".
Very strange.
On top of this problem I have to re-setup the network access for all via the online configuration UI each time the drive is started / rebooted - very annoying. Without doing this I cant map the drive via D-Link Easy Search Utility because it keeps on asking me for logins to which I have no clue what they are.
D-Link, I think there's enough in these forums that version 1.04 is not up to scratch! Please fix.

Hi
I can no longer print to the usb printer after upgrading to 1.04 from 1.03. I found the following bugs:
ftp icons show wrong info.
schedule icons show wrong info.
schedule and power saving (sleep mode) does not work together.
usb printer / network printing is broken.
sometimes the fan slows down but never stops. Even when the box is cold.
I'm almost at the stage of taking my DNS-323 back for a refund. I have found this forum and going to see if anyone can help. Some people on the forum needed to hack the dns-323 with the fun pack (warranty is lost once installed) to fix problems. I can not install the fun pack as I what to refund my unit.
Thank you

Who told you that using fun_plug voids your warranty? That seems silly since you can just remove your hard drives and there is no trace of fun_plug left on the device.
Also, I saw in another post that you schedule daily backups on the device. If you didn't use fun_plug to do this, then are you using the bundled Memeo software? Most in this forum consider that software to be basically useless.
After upgrading from firmware 1.03 to 1.04, did you reformat your drives? This might fix some of the more obscure problems that you're seeing, though you should search through the forum for your individual issues, as others have posted some relevant information in separate threads.

I have had a similar experience with 1T WD drives in RAID 1 on DNS-323 but have not been able to get drives synced.
