Does DSM-320RD support srt subtitle when playing avi files in DNS 323?

Hi guys,

I'm a newbie here. I'm looking for a low budget media player compatible with my DNS 323. Now I'm considering the D-Link DSM-320RD. I want to know that whether DSM-320RD supports srt subtitle when using it to play avi files in DNS 323? Thank you in advance. smile

Cheers,

Re: Does DSM-320RD support srt subtitle when playing avi files in DNS 323?

I wouldn't try to stream video over wirless (maybe you think you have a reliable wireless connection though!)

I have a Kiss 1600 DVD/network media player which I was going to send back (or just give away) until I got kissdx running on my DNS323.

I use the ethernet connection of the KISS 1600 and have used the enclosed Nero Recode software to rip a couple of DVDs to MP4 ("Nero Digital"). That format can hold multiple soundracks and subtitles. To rip a commercial DVD you'll need to also have AnyDVD installed otherwise it can't rip the DVD.

For video rips I've only done two tests to Nero Digital (it's not really a feature I use), one worked, and the other always freezes in the same place. Probably I could use different encode settings to get around this.

kissdx has various config parameters related to finding sub files for video files (I guess that means xvid .AVIs?), but I've not tested that.

Using kissdx as the server the Kiss 1600 UI is fairly snappy, and has been completely reliable streaming MP3s, and puts a special back-to-back entry in each folder for gapless playback if you need that.

The kissdx doesn't really play well with "proper" UPnP servers like Twonky, even though Twonky has a special KISS profile for it. Often I get list items doubled up, there is an extra level of menu hierarchy to go through, and lists are a lot slower to render.

Please don't take this as a recommendation to get a KISS player, but it is working for me with the DNS323

Reviews at Amazon seem fair:

I hope some of that is helpful!

Thanks richneo and sjmac.

After googling a lot, I finally found the answer: It looks possible as long as you install the MediaTomb in DNS-323. For people who may be interested in, take a look at this thread:
