Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.
You are not logged in.
I decided to move this to a separate thread rather than take the other one further off topic.
Hard troubleshooting starts with a theory, and follows up with investigation - my problem is that without being able to see the problem, I can't move past step #1 - the theory.
I'm not disputing - and in fact have never disputed - that the problem is in the firmware, however, as far as this device is concerned - the "firmware" is actually an entire operating system environment, making it an entire order of magnitude more complex than most "firmware" would be - I'll also point out that since the problem does NOT occur with all drives (it has yet to rear it's head with the drives available to me) that it is not entirely in the firmware, but rather an interaction between the DNS-323 firmware and that of specific drives.
Put yourself in the shoes of a person experiencing the problem - would you like to be able to perhaps reposition a jumper and be able to run your drives with the latest firmware without fear of degradation?
Sure I could be wrong - but - I could just as easily be right.

I pulled a Maxtor 250GB drive out of my IBM server and stuck into my DNS-323 in place of the usual Seagate - I now have the "white" or "pink" LED and the degraded volume message - my aim is to see whether or not I can duplicate the repeated random degradation reported by others and of course whether or not, delayed spin up has any impact on it.
We're definitely not off to a good start - despite correctly showing me which drive would be formatted, the box seems to have formatted the wrong drive - I had installed the Maxtor as it came out of the IBM with whatever data that was on it (something that I would not normally do - but something that other folk here have reported as causing problems) in the left bay.
My data would have been lost if I did not have it backed up elsewhere.
I'm now formatting the mismatched drives in a RAID1 array.

OK - systems back up, fun_plug reinstalled, /.lpd recreated - a couple of restarts done along the way, but no issues noted - we'll run it like this for a month or so and see how it plays out.
