Can the DNS-323 get a virus?

My wife wants to back up her files to the DNS-323, but she hasn't had a anti-virus program on her laptop for a year now.  Would it be safe for her to put her files onto the DNS-323?  Can the DNS-323 be virus attacked?

Can a anti-virus program be installed and run on the DNS-323 to that it can check all the file to make sure it's safe and clear?

Thanking you all in advance,
Chippathingy

Re: Can the DNS-323 get a virus?

The DNS-323 run a Linux OS and it can get a computer virus.  However, there is a far greater number
of computer viruses created for the Microsoft Windows OS.  So, the chances of a computer virus targeting
the DNS-323 are very slim (IMHO).  This also depends greatly on how exposed your DNS_323 is to non-
trustworthy files.

That being said, the DNS-323 will gladly store any virus infected file you copy to its hard drive with
virus intact, and infect any computer that accesses that file.

I think, the best way, (IMHO), to check all the file to make sure it's save and clear, is to install
a virus checking program on the source laptop and clean up the file before the transfer.  If it's Windows
OS there are several free programs for you to choose from, mostly limited to home and personal use.

Re: Can the DNS-323 get a virus?

This poses an interesting question.

I think the one risk is your wife getting a malicious computer virus on the laptop that wipes out or corrupts everything it can find, and if it can find your shares on DNS-323, it can end up wiping out everything on your DNS-323 hard drives if somehow the network drive is connected.  Make sure that your shares are password protected, and that the permissions on the backup files are set in a way that cannot be wiped out remotely.
