WD10EACS incompatibility, help!

Unit:
DNS-323
PN: BNS323A......B1
SN: P1Ka181...
H/W Ver: B1
F/W Ver: 1.03

Drives:
WD Caviar GP (green. 1TB)
PN: WD10EACS-00ZJB0
MF Date: 13 MAR 2008
SN: WCASJ14...

Problem:
Power LED on front panel doesnt stop flashing, waited for over 10 mins.
Web interface not accessible.

Tested:
1 WD drive in each bay by itself. Drive LED does light up and stay solid with occasional random flashes.
2 WD drives in both bays. Both drive LEDs light up and stay solid with occasional random flashes.
1 WD drive with jumper settings: (1+2) or (1+2 and 2+3) or (2+3) or (2+3 and 3+4) or (1+2 and 3+4) or (3+4)
Note: any time (2+3) was jumped, the power LED would go solid but the drive was not found in the web interface.
2 WD drives with previous jumper settings
0 Drives, this worked. the Power LED went solid, web interface came up and i was able to mess around with it.
Flashed firmware to 1.04 (01/2008) from the US website.
Full Reset via the instructions on the wiki
1 Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 (160gb) ST3160023AS, tried in each bay, worked. web interface asked to format.
Re-tried the WD's all over again. failed. power still flashes.

Request:
I read that the D-link linux kernel was a few versions behind the mainstream release but i dont know how to update it.
i am not looking to pimp out my box but i would simply like to get it running.
ive seen other posts on this site stating that the WD10EACS has worked before.
anyone have any ideas? or should i just return everything?

Kae - I have 2 of those HD and I don't have that problem.

Does your HD work on a computer or external enclosure?

Re: WD10EACS incompatibility, help!

So i took each drive and attached it to my Pico computer.
i then used Hiren's BootCD 9.5 and ran multiple tests against the drives with different jumper settings.

low and behold...
solid bad sectors. everywhere!

on 2 brand new drives!

gah.

Re: WD10EACS incompatibility, help!

Hi,

I have one of these WD drives. It is compatible with the device but I can't get it to format. Keeps sticking at 94%.

Re: WD10EACS incompatibility, help!

So i went to the WD website and applied for an Advance RMA.
Got 2 replacement drives in the mail today and popped them into the DNS323

all 3 LED's went solid and i pulled up the website.
There they were! both drives.

Jumper settings are "None".

I started a format of a RAID 1.
the first time around it said finished and rebooted.
when the website came back up, it was asking me to format again.

i hit "skip" and poked around the settings.
after seeing "0 drives total" i went to Tools - RAID and clicked "Set RAID Type and Re-Format".
i chose RAID 1 again and hit "next"
a smaller browser window came up and started formating.
10 to 15 min later and its almost finished..

and now it has stopped at 94%.

so, yet again.. i feel let down.

Re: WD10EACS incompatibility, help!

FINALLY!

Total Drive(s):     2
Volume Name:     Volume_1
Volume Type:     RAID 1
Sync Time Remaining:     Completed
Total Hard Drive Capacity:     981858 MB
Used Space:     24 KB
Unused Space:     981858 MB

I took both drives out and set the jumper to 1-2, the vertical set closest to the outside edge of the drive.

Seems there is interference causing problems. this may be due to the lack of shielding between the bottom of the right side drive and motherboard components.

By enabling "Spread Spectrum" via the 1-2 jumper, this changes the data transmissions from being a spike shape on the frequency range, into more of a belle curve, therefore increasing the chance that data can get through unaffected.

diagrams can be found at:
http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg … faqid=1679

if that link dies, search for "WD10EACS" in the Service and Support section of the WD Website.
the article is titled 'Specifications for the Western Digital Caviar GP Serial ATA hard drives.'

have a great day! *tail swish*

Re: WD10EACS incompatibility, help!

I find it odd that you are having this problem.  I'm running these same drive and have had no problems with them.

Edit:

What hardware level (DNS) do you have?
