I'm setting up a new RAID configuration for a small office (5 employees) and am looking into the 323 with 2 WD5001ABYS dirves. Any comments?
thanks in advance

None!
If the drives are SATA, and provide enough storage for 5 employee's, go for it!
I would only add, you should consider a Gigabit switch and gigabit network cards for each pc *IF* you think large files (hundreds of Megabytes upward) will be sent to by/between the users/DNS regularly..

thanks DarkHorseDre for the quick reply! These are WD's SATA 500GB RE2 drives, supposedly enterprise quality with 5yr warranties. i've read all the drama regarding firmware 1.04. i'm thinking of sticking with 1.03 for now. any bad experiences for 1.03? the files arent' huge, 20-30 megs at most. I want to set this thing up in RAID1 mode. my understanding is that if 1 drive fails, the data won't be lost. Is that correct? I am planning on having the unit on 24x7.
sorry for all the rudimentary questions, this is my first RAID installation.
thanks again.

Keep in mind, RAID is NOT a backup. If the data is important, you need to have a method of backup. RAID 1 is for having the data available in the event of 1 drive failure.

thanks bq041. I understand that RAID1 is not backup. I will backup the data separately on an external drive once a week.

Sounds good to me.. I don't have experience with competing products but found the DNS323 to be very flexible and feature rich.
It will do what you ask of it.
It's good you'll back up the DNS separately! Please consider storing that "external disk" off-site somewhere, as you'll lose everything in the event of fire/flood/explosion/theft etc.
Good luck!

thanks for all your help and inputs. Today I upgraded the firmware to 1.05 from the dlink site, the WD5001ABYS drives seem to work very well. all the lights are blue -- I guess that means everything is a-ok. trasnferiing data to/from the 323 is very fast. I am impressed.

No worries mate.. I'll have to check out the 1.05 too..
Setup the email alerts etc. so that you know when stuff goes wrong.. be careful of what you set the temperatures limit to (if you use this alert) as the unit shuts down when it reaches that temp. and sends the email! I set mine too low and found that out
The documentation I read didn't specify this...

Hi!
I also bought the DNS-323 yesterday!
First of all I did a FW upgrade to 1.05 then I startet to create a Raid1 with 2 WD5001ABYS.
Unfortunately the progressbar stuck at 94%(tried 2 times); the strange thing is that after a restart of the DNS323 I saw within the interface that the Raidset seems to be created and online.
I also was able to copy data on it and both HDD started flashing and data was on and accessable.
However, due to the fact that there was no message that the Raidset was created successfully I am now afraid that there went something wrong.
What do you think about this strange behavior? What do you suggest?
thanks in advance!

The % indicator that is on your screen actually has relevent indication as to actual progress. It is just a timer that is set to check steps every so often. It will count regardless of progress, or not. That being said, if the RAID is up and working, it is just that, working. There is no in between. The raid actually only takes 3 seconds to form, if you were doing the process manually. It is one of those things, it is made, or it is not made.
